Anyone partaking for medical or mental health reasons?
    #19351611 - 12/31/13 03:39 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Anyone else out there doing mushrooms for medicinal reasons?

Personally I started experimenting as a possible benefit for OCD (pure-o).  As a side note I don't mind sharing results if anyone is in that particular boat.

I've also read the studies about shrooms as a treatment for migraines, and dealing with terminal illness although I'm not sure how effective it is for those in practical (non-academic) situations.

Aside from medical benefits, after my first trips I've been really surprised at how previous trip reports can't really convey the sense of insight and meaning you can feel.  Yes, people describe it, but it's so different than feeling it.

Welcome... :aweyeah:

I don't use psychedelics for any kind of diagnosed disorder, but definitely see them as an integral part of caring for my mind and heart.

I'm curious about your experience of OCD and mushrooms, though...

Hello hmm - good to hear from people after my first post.

On shrooms and OCD, I'm still mid-experiment but so far it seems like they offer a unique and significant improvement.

The results are positive in-trip and post-trip but very different.

During a trip, my OCD symptoms drop to zero.  It is the most amazing feeling, but also sad because it makes clear how much worry and obsessive thoughts place limitations on a persons life.

What's startling is the feeling of being "normal", utterly balanced, and free from intrusive thoughts.  It's not about the euphoria of the trip.  After a recent surgery I did enjoy the euphoria of hydro condone, but that was only about feeling pleasure.  My trips are about clarity, sanity, quieting of the mind.

Post-trip I am not cured in the same dramatic way, but over the following days the symptoms are reduced significantly.  Now I'm in the process of finding out how long it lasts.  Can multiple trips make a cumulative improvement over time?  And what negative effects will persist such as hypnic jerks that now make it harder to fall asleep.

Caveats:
1).  Brains are different.  Someone else could get no benefit from the exact same shrooms.

2).  There are countless variations of OCD, for example mine is pure-o, which means I have no compulsions like hand washing, only the obsessive thoughts.  So it's easy to conceive different variations could have different results.

3). Since I'm experimenting on myself I can offer little scientific rigor.  My results are anecdotal.  I have no control group or double blind testing.  How much do placebo effects factor in?

That said, I am sure it deserves more research and it's a terrible loss that society makes that so difficult in 2014.

Oh, and happy new year

This .. I'm in the same boat as you but for different reasons. Tripping for me is not about how "high" i can get. Its about what you have said above. I also enjoy the spiritual side of tripping to.

How many times have you tripped? I personally feel that they do have very long lasting benefits for a whole host of psychological problems.

I started to experiment with Psilocybin as a treatment for depression.

I've used an array of "daily" meds prescribed by doctors over a number of years and they did nothing but mask the problem and eventually make it worse.

Psilocybin has done the complete opposite from single doses that are often spaced many weeks apart. I haven't touched prescribed meds for over a year and I've never felt better.

Like you i have self medicated and have no control or double blind studies, but i know how i feel in my own mind and right now I'm in a good place.

Why this miracle chemical is not being heavily funded for its therapeutic properties is ridiculous.

I had a bit of a nervous breakdown, around this time last year.
A lot of good came out of it but it kinda left me in shambles.
I lost my mojo, all my previous confidence was demolished and for sometime I was just lost. All inertia from previous experience was halted, no wind in sails.
I lived like that for about three months unemployed and under stimulated. Compared to the highs and lows of before this constant baseline was very comfortable, nothing of importance happened during this period. I didn't talk much, just listened and observed.
By the time shroom season came around I knew I couldn't stay in this "mode" any longer.  I naturally began to take very small doses 4 days out of the week. With in a week I began to feel human again, I had silly dreams and aspirations, I began to feel emotions again.
I became vigilant about eating and exercise. I began to feel this "illusory" experience has a real meaning to it, purpose.

Its very strange I always thought of mushrooms as a "right brain" thing. Because in the beginning they introduced me to "her", but after this experience I think of them now as a balancing agent.

Started cultivating to treat my cluster headaches - just posted a thread about it as I started my treatment just this week.

So far I'm 3 days without migraines after 21 straight gulping down ibuprofen to get through the holidays. Only side effect is a good time and a good dose of introspection. :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

EDIT: anyone else looking for info on cluster headache treatment with tryptamines check out this link.

Yea I have used them to treat and to me cure my Anxiety and Major Depression Disorder I had since I was 14 i didn't even know how healing these things could be even though I watched stuff about it healing cluster headaches and Terminal cancer patients who suffer from anxiety about death. I won't go into detail but it took me a lot more than 1 trip to really feel the healing but I can say all them were in some way all healing but eventually I had a strong trip and started to really dig into why I ever had these false feelings like fear and sadness. Mushrooms are my savior.

Worked for me too
LSD worked even better, but mushrooms are almost as good

seems to be permanent, did not trip for 8-9 months last time I took a break, it didnt get less
happiness lasts :-)

before I was depressed, careless about myself for 10+ years, ate junkfood everyday+smoked weed everyday, it all stopped
lost like half my weight lol

heals the soul, then the body starts healing after the soul has healed

havent had any problems for 2-3 years or so now, they vanished

I'm glad LSD has helped you so much like mushrooms did for me. to me LSD was way too fun and not really that spiritual unless your taking a lot of it like it makes you want to dance and listen to music rather than close your eyes In a dark room even under a 3g dose it's very introspective and not so visual on small doses but can be very very usual the higher you go up and LSD for me lasted to long the more you took and not really that much in intensity while mushrooms you come back In at least 4 hours and comedown is very calm and reflective but that's just my subjective experience with it.

I use psychedelics to see how it can help my deppression and anger issues. My mother says shes noticed that I am a little more patient and its obvious I am making an effort.
