Vermiculite Air filter...
    #19357622 - 01/02/14 09:03 AM (10 years, 29 days ago)

My first 30 brf jars colonised without any contamination whatsoever.. I just 'nocced up my next 10 last week and 3 of the jars have gotten nasty looking contams all at the meeting point between the verm air filter and the substrate, the only difference is that for these jars I used a much coarser vermiculite... My thinking is that it's not working well enough as a filter due to being much airier... Does this sound right?

i'm not 100% sure, but it would stand to reason that the finer grained verm would act as a better filter barrier against contams. Don't move/jostle your jars if you don't have to, the dry verm layer can settle down further into your jars allowing contams to fall into your mixture... hope that helps

Sounds about right to me.

How long did you sterilize them for?

The brf tek calls for fine verm.  Course verm won't filter anything, nor will it absorb enough water to work properly in the mix.
