inactive Gym?
    #19356206 - 01/01/14 08:48 PM (10 years, 29 days ago)

I found these today growing from dead oak log in the florida panhandle. They are quite small, largest is just over an inch wide across the cap. Spore print is an orange color and they taste very bitter. Does not appear to have an annulus and i believe the gills are attached. The larger brownish print in one of the pics is from a cort i found near by. I have never found gyms, so i am hoping these are them.sorry bout the pic quality, about the best i could do. thanks.

They are Gymnopilus.  However they look close enough to the deadly Galerina margainata that I would not recommend eating them.  There are other Gymnopilus species with green staining and fiberous caps that easily distinguish them from Galerina marginata.  Your small smooth capped Gym is too close.....And does not even stain green/blue so probably not active.

Oh im not concerned with eating them. there are plenty of other options as far as that is concerned. Im just trying to get my id skills down with the gyms, for when the time comes and i do find an active one. Is there anyway to know which species this may be? I appreciate the info, and im excited about findng them. thanks again, Alan:thumbup:
