Arctic rescue a success!
    #19355876 - 01/01/14 06:55 PM (10 years, 29 days ago)

Looks like indica is drinking with the Russians tonight!

----------------
(CNN) -- Efforts to rescue a research crew aboard a ship stuck in the frozen seas off Antarctica appeared to be a go, with reports weather conditions have improved enough to launch a helicopter to pick up the passengers, Australian maritime officials said Thursday.

If successful, the helicopter lift marks the beginning of the end of a saga that began Christmas Eve after the Russian-flagged MV Akademik Shokalskiy got stuck in 10 feet of ice.

If the rescue begins within hours, it will still be weeks before the research team will make it to Hobart, Australia, John Young of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.

"Mid-January is our best guess," Young told reporters on a conference call.

The helicopter, which can transport 12 people each trip, will take the ship's 52 passengers -- who include the research team and journalists -- to the Chinese icebreaker called the Snow Dragon, or Xue Long, the maritime agency said. The 22 crew members of the Akademik Shokalskiy will stay aboard, it said.

The passengers will then be transported by barge from the Chinese ship to the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis.

The entire rescue operation is expected to take anywhere between five and 12 hours, according to the maritime agency.

"This rescue will be a complex operation involving a number of steps and subject to factors such as weather," said Lisa Martin, a spokeswoman with the Australian maritime agency.

No, I don't believe he's aboard a Russian ship.

Given the last update on their situation, absolutely nothing seemed in danger. They were just stuck in the ice. So sweet I suppose, their vacation ended.

They sounded a lot better off than that cruise ship that was stuck drifting for days

Those people acted like they just got out of the apocalypse

Many of the ships are Russian operated/built but have crew/passengers from elsewhere.

IIRC, indica is on a ship that sails under Australian flag. Judging by the name of the research vessel, it sails under Russian flag. Too bad he deleted his pics in this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15785391/fpart/all/vc/1

If I'm remembering right from the other thread on the stranded ship, it sounded like Indica was on the rescue ship "Aurora Australis," rather than the ship that was stuck.

Because its funny. The research scientists were under the impression that global warming combined with summer would make for ice free waters. Boy were they wrong, 15' at some parts. Only the ships crew is staying.

it was christmas morning when we got the call (I was on watch) that they were in danger as they were trapped in the ice with an iceberg drifting towards them that ould have done some pretty nasty thangs.

so we pulled our shit in and made our way real quick thinking it was a bit of an emergency, a day or so into our 4 day voyage to get to them they told us that the iceberg no longer presented a danger and they would still require assistane to either break them out or at least get the tourists off and get them home.

then they tried to downplay it saying they were never in any real danger but in reality if there was no danger they would not have scrambled three ships from three different nationalities to help them.
