The kings of LSD

By kings of LSD I mean the pioneers of LSD. The men and women that jump started the counter-culture movement. At this point in time my two favorites consist of Aldous Huxley and Alan Watts, but I was hoping someone could broaden my horizons. I am open to authors and philosophers. I didn't really include my favorite musicians in this post.

I created LSD. You won't believe me, that's fine. Everyone was asking me how I did it. I just told them the truth. Jesus told me how.

Owsley Stanley was a big influence in the counter-culture and psychedelic-rock.
"Stanley was the first private individual to manufacture mass quantities of LSD.[1][2][3] Between 1965 and 1967, Stanley produced more than 1.25 million doses of LSD"
"During his time as the sound engineer for the Grateful Dead, Stanley started what became the long-term practice of recording the Dead while they rehearsed and performed."
"Stanley met the members of the Grateful Dead during 1965,[10] financing them and working with them as their first soundman.[11] Along with his close friend Bob Thomas, he designed the Lightning Bolt Skull Logo,[12] often referred to by fans as "Steal Your Face", "Stealie" or SYF "
"Stanley also provided LSD to The Beatles during filming of Magical Mystery Tour.[9]"

He refers to LSD in some of his books and he's spoken of it in lectures. He's a big fan

Ok i was just wondering because coincidentally one of my friends said he was somehow involved in the discovery of lsd or in the very early stages of when it was becoming legal. i didn't believe him so i guess i was right
and there's a nice little clip about him talking on LSD, it's the only one i've seen on him talking about it.

Huxley's experience was with mescaline, and his book was based on mescaline. I believe he did invent the word psychedelic. Before he wrote those words they were just called hallucinogens.

The word was first suggested by Humphry Osmond (a British-born Canadian psychiatrist) in a letter to Huxley in 1956.

Timothy leary was a crazy fuck and I can't stand to listen to nor read his insane mutterings so he doesn't bbelong here. Hoffman and Huxley and arguably owsley do..

While Leary undeniably caused irreversible damage to the legality and reputation of LSD, he played a big part in the psychedelic movement, opening Pandora's box to the public. He most certainly does belong here.

Ken Kesey all the way. I'm pretty sure he was part of the MKULTRA stuff, or at least claimed to be. He seemed like an all around cool guy.

You're right, the Doors of Perception was about his experience with mescaline, but LSD definitely held a place in his heart. And even though his book was about a mescaline experience, I think it turned a lot of people on to psychedelics in general, so I think he belongs on the list.
“On the morning of November 22nd, a Friday, it became clear the gap between living and dying was closing. Realizing that Aldous [Huxley] might not survive the day, Laura [Huxley's wife] sent a telegram to his son, Matthew, urging him to come at once. At ten in the morning, an almost inaudible Aldous asked for paper and scribbled “If I go” and then some directions about his will. It was his first admission that he might die …
Around noon he asked for a pad of paper and scribbled
LSD-try it intermuscular 100mm
In a letter circulated to Aldous’s friends, Laura Huxley described what followed: ‘You know very well the uneasiness in the medical mind about this drug. But no ‘authority’, not even an army of authorities, could have stopped me then. I went into Aldous’s room with the vial of LSD and prepared a syringe. The doctor asked me if I wanted him to give the shot- maybe because he saw that my hands were trembling. His asking me that made me conscious of my hands, and I said, ‘No, I must do this.’
An hour later she gave Huxley a second 100mm. Then she began to talk, bending close to his ear, whispering, ‘light and free you let go, darling; forward and up. You are going forward and up; you are going toward the light. Willingly and consciously you are going, willingly and consciously, and you are doing this beautifully — you are going toward the light — you are going toward a greater love … You are going toward Maria’s [Huxley's first wife, who had died many years earlier] love with my love. You are going toward a greater love than you have ever known. You are going toward the best, the greatest love, and it is easy, it is so easy, and you are doing it so beautifully.’
All struggle ceased. The breathing became slower and slower and slower until, ‘like a piece of music just finishing so gently in sempre piu piano, dolcamente,’ at twenty past five in the afternoon, Aldous Huxley died.”
Laura Huxley in This Timeless Moment (1971) as quoted by Jay Stevens in “”Storming Heaven: LSD and the American Dream (1987)

Just want to make a comment on Timothy Leary. He is NOT the reason LSD is illegal. The fucking guy is dead and psychedelic research is still not being prohibited in many areas. It has nothing to do with him and has everything to do with our governments and cultures attitudes toward these drugs.
It was inevitable that LSD, psilocybin, cannabis, dmt, etc be used by people whether Leary existed or not.

It is just a tool to turn us into what we are supposed to be.” ― Albert Hofmann

His advocacy gave him a very influential and provoking role in bringing LSD to the attention of the public youth.
He's not the reason LSD was made illegal, but he certainly played his part indirectly.

I agree but the guy was still insane, with his retarded theories. I never paid attention to nor studied that 8 circuit model or whatever but doesn't it say that humans are evolving to live in outer space or some wacko shit?
