The other downside is that its expensive.  Last time Florida did this shit they spent more money on testing than they saved by withholding benefits.

But hey, people on welfare using drugs are just "junkies" right?

Not to mention the rules and regulations that go into being on Welfare in the first place. Anyone thinking these people are "living it up" on the government dole is either willfully ignorant or downright cruel. Most Welfare recipients don't WANT to be on Welfare. It's humiliating, degrading, and not enough on its own (subsidized housing and EBT are often necessary as well). So, while I've never been on non-student loan government assistance (and I thank the gods and Fortuna for that) I certainly don't begrudge people who need the help whether they're "junkies" or not.

Then again, I am that bitch who will buy a homeless guy a sandwich and a 40 oz so what do I know?

I agree with all that you said, who the Fuck wants to be on wellfair. Its bad enough I don't have the money to do anything for me anyway (I only have EBT, and unemployment and medicade Coming I'in) and life sucks I want to be on my own and many others as well.

You must be new..

If you do some research you will see why this is a terrible idea.

Also, guess who would have been supplying these drug tests? Solantic! Guess who owns the majority of Solantic? Yup, you guessed it, Rick Scott's family! "Let's make some money mothafuckazzz!"

Thank god this was turned down.

no im not new, i have been posting and using this forum for years. each to the own i guess, this is just my opinion on this subject and there were bound to be people who disagree...

You make it sound like folks applying for welfare are junkies...

A very small percentage of applicants are actually "users" of drugs. 2.6% of the state’s cash assistance applicants failed the drug test, or 108 of 4,086. Taxpayers spent $118,140 to reimburse people for drug test costs, not counting attorneys and court fees and the thousands of hours of staff time it took to implement the policy

It's a ridiculous cost for such a petty thing.

And you really want to know why Florida wanted to implement this?...The governor of Florida, Rick Scott, co-founded Solantic, a chain of 32 urgent care centers in Florida that offers drug testing services. The governor has $62 million worth of the company’s shares, the biggest portion of his $218 million in wealth. Before he stepped into office and before all of this welfare drug testing was implemented, he transferred his shares into his Wife's name. It's obvious why, by doing so, this is legally not a conflict of interest in Florida. But in reality, this is all a huge fucking conflict of interest, promoting policies that will benefit his family financially. The dude is making money from it.

There's always a motive behind shit like this, and it's not to keep junkies from getting welfare  .

The only people who should be drug tested are politicians...

In Indiana, there was a bill that would require welfare applicants to take a drug test. There was an amendment added to the bill, this amendment would require all legislators to be drug tested.

And guess what?...The entire bill was withdrawn once that amendment was added. . I believe the same thing happened in Kansas.

Also...relating to this topic. One of the lawmakers in Georgia that was pushing for welfare drug testing got caught driving all sorts of drunk around the time he was pushing for the bill. And I believe there was another similar case, where the lawmaker was caught in possession of cocaine.

Hypocrisy at it's finest.

Please enlighten me?, since when does Florida have "Welfare"? This term seems to be boasted by the press to sell the story, we don't even have a bottle/can deposit for beverage containers because the state doesn't want to encourage the homeless to come here thinking they can live on the streets.

Florida has what is labeled "The Dept. Of Children And Families", they handle food stamps as well if you have kids they can assist you with housing and food and money if deemed. There is no actual "Welfare", like in new York where you get an apartment, money and the lot.

The press loves an easy sell on a story, so the hicks down in the south are always an easy target, any dam thing happens in Florida, sure enough we are painted as snake handlers.
