Question for my canadian friends out there...
    #19348533 - 12/30/13 08:51 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

How easy is it to come live in your fair land?

I've been looking mainly at British Columbia, whistler/vancouver area, but am open to anywhere that I can tear down a mountain. Snowboardings the main thing thats enticing me to make this move.

I'm 24, coming from the UK, looking to stay about 3 months, maybe longer. What sort of visa am I looking at? Work? Whats the waiting time like? Could I make the move in a months time? Or would I be lucky to do it in 6? If at all?
I've got training in security, over a years experience working clubs and bars. Also years worth of driving experience (domino's pizza) and a 1st year degree in music... But not much else qualifications/work experience wise.
Anyone shed some light on this for me? Would really appreciate it.

And btw, Trailer Park Boys is quite possibly the greatest TV show humanity has ever created. Utterly, utterly brilliant. I don't even think the creators realise JUST HOW GOOD it is. Funniest shit ever.

if you are just looking for a three month visit (ie, temporary not permanent), being from the UK you probably don't even need to apply for a visa before hand but can just show up

if you want to work, you will need to apply for a work visa, but my experience of other folks living in canada on a temporary work visa doesn't make the process seem to difficult--i would guess the limiting regent in this equation would be the length of time for your application to be received and processed--a month may be pushing it, but i don't see it going past two months--definitely would be ready by six months

work is easy to find in canada, if you know where to go--whistler/vancouver during the ski-bum season will most likely has lots of basic jobs that would fit your experience--bar jobs, delivery work, even work on the slopes should be possible to get

i don't know the details--what with never having to apply for a visa to my own country--but from meeting folks who are living in canada on a temporary work visa, it's much simpler of a process than applying for permanent residency (which is fairly stringent)

Have a clean record - If you have a dui or where charged with a crime you won't be able to enter.

I don't know about for a few months, but when I tried to get permanent residency after having a student visa for four years I found it to be very difficult. You need to prove you're an asset to the country and your employer needs to prove that they couldn't hire a Canadian to do your job. Pretty tough.

That said, if you can find a cheap school to go to part-time, the student visa bit was easy.

In order to stay permanently you need 50000$, a clean record, a job prospect, perfect health, have a skill that is needed in the country.

If you manage to get in, you won't be allowed welfare, health care, basically anything government provided for 3 months. Your degrees may not be recognize (I doubt it cause of the UK). Basically they let you in for your cash and your on your own for a while.

Best of luck.

I guess.

We are extremely picky with the selection process. Half the planet wants to move to Canada and we only let in a quarter million of them per year. It's still WAAAY too high if you ask me, but whatever, 250000 * 50000$ = 12 billion dollars. I guess I'll tolerate it...

you canadians def have the lesser of the 2 evils.
