Thinking of starting a coffee jar terrarium

I've got this rather large coffee jar thats empty. I'm going to put some fine gravel on the bottom and then have a layer of moss.
Any idea what I could grow in it?

Drosera (sundew plant) might be cool in a mini terrarium.

Hey guys, heres a pic of the jar next to a pound coin for comparison.

By the looks of it, if its a closed jar terrarium (no ventilation) it needs activated carbon. Since im a bit impatient, ive gone ahead and drilled holes in the cap in the hope the plants are gonna be just fine. Im off out soon to gather some moss and hopefully some plants to stick in it.

Note, I have some gauze ready and put it in the cap for now.
I'll keep you guys updated!

Rightio, everything's set up now, I gotta layer of gravel, a layer of compost, a layer of common moss and a nice twig covered in some lichen. Its basic, and I would have liked a plant in there, but that's the beauty of these things, all you need is another empty jar and you're set to go.
Anyways, here it is for the minute!

I have thought about doing an aquarium one too, and putting my Nepenthes plants in it. I was looking into making one out plexiglass panels. I figure it doesn't need to be nearly as strong if you're not filling it with water, so you could get away with using much thinner material than you would use for a real aquarium.

They definitely are not all that hard to find, at least if you live near a major population center. Fairly pricy though. Dendrobates is one genus that includes a bunch of different commercially available varieties.

Don't they have an alkaloid that's an opiate 10000x stronger than morphine or something like that? Or do they have curare?
It should never be ingested though. The dosage would be way too hard to get right. You fuck up slightly and you're dead.

IIRC they are not lethal in captivity because they need certain ants or something in their diet to produce the toxins. Curare comes from plant sources I think, different toxins but used similarly in hunting.

This is correct. They are not poisonous in captivity. A good friend of mine has tons of poison dart frogs including the Blue Azureus one pictured above, he breeds them for trade and sale on some herp forum.

I'm going to attempt my hand at some,if I can get back down to Florida.I think they would thrive down there, and possibly breed:-)It's just too cold up here during the winter months, and this old house even with the heat on it's as cold as ice

UPDATE 8/01/14I dunno what this is, but there's even more of them since I took this pic, kinda looks like cress. They're super fast growers too, this one doubled in size since I took the pic last night. Must mean I'm doing something right, good too see the moss is surviving too. Lichens on the stick are brighter than ever. More than happy to inbox or make a journal on how to make one of these suckas and the watering/lighting routine

Oh dude, you're gonna go all out! Hmm,I would think if you want things to harvest, you could make it an herb garden, and grow varieties of plants that don't get too tall/big.Perhaps some Parsley,Thyme,Oregano, etc.

Go hard or go home bud! To be honest its just an empty fish tank with 3 of its sides lined with kitchen foil hahaha, ive just stuck a good load of compost in there, think it'll be too small for a poppy, herbs may be the best bet, you dont happen to know how tall camomile grows do you?

What size tank,29 gallon?I can't really tell.Chamomile would be a good one,as it stays under a foot tall, and has a spread of one to three feet. You can always trim the plants up,to keep the compact, and bushy too:-)Give me a few more weeks, and after I get moved,I'm going to start up possibly a 55 gallon!

Thought I'd visit this thread and let you all know how its progressing. Its bloomed so well now and the entire jar is like a jungle haha. I'll post pics as soon as I remember. Theres actually some weeds coming out of the holes I drilled in the top. Im having a bit of a problem with springtails however and some of the leaves are starting to die out so this may be the beginning of the end for it, for this year at least.
As far as I know theres about 3 different species of plant in there but this has been so fun to watch progress. Ive got another jar of the same size all empty so I'll be making another one shortly, maybe with some more colour this time. I recommend anyone try this sort of thing!
