Happy New Year! today I am a Official Daddy!

Today I have shrooms, my first grow, and I know I owe all the credit to those who have helped me in the forums here. They are just oysters, super easy to grow everyone keeps saying, but I felt uneasy about the process and am learning a lot, and super geeked and happy I have success.
This particular batch (I'll get more pics when they are more developed.) was made by using mycelium plugs I just got from 'someone' on EBAY for $10 for 72 plugs and are I believe grey oysters. I took the plugs made BRF cakes with 2 cups vermiculite 1 cup brown rice flour from brown rice I used in a coffee grinder, just put the pint jars with the verm mixture and steamed it for 90 minutes, let it cool, and inserted the plugs into it and let it grow, which it did fairly quickly. then once the entire cake was white, I mixed some plain wheat straw that was cut to a few inches into a 9 parts faucet water with 1 part hydrogen peroxide and let it soak for 24 hours, drained it, packed it tightly inside a ziplock bag, cut up the verm cake with a knife I wiped down with alcohol into little chunks, and put them in with the straw, and let it sit until it looked mostly white (I am betting I should of let it get more covered with mycelium.) I then, like a goof probably, removed the plastic bag, and set it inside my fruiting chamber, which is two blue bins inverted, with a good 4-6 " perlite on the bottom, and a ultrasonic humidifier hooked up to the one side and 1/4" holes drilled into it (They are not every 2 inches, more like 3-4" ) and a t5 24W 6500k light cut into the top of the inverted bin. both the humidifier and the light are on timers. it humidifies at a low setting every hour for a few minutes with a model # czhd22 and the light stays on 12 hours.
I have a computer fan, that I was actually just about to install, when I noticed I had the shrooms...so not sure if I am going to install it or not....still thinking about it, suggestions welcome. the chambers maintains a 90% humidity level as is, not much collection or moisture on the sides, very little in fact, but I am thinking for no reason at all, they might like it more moist when pinning, and a bit drier when growing and maintaining fruit? What do y'all think?
next golden oysters, and then hopefully blue oysters, kings, chicken of the woods and maitake. and refining my technique along the way.

Looks good. I would keep them in the bag next time and just cut slits to fruit. The fan is a good idea as oysters like as much fresh air as you can provide. Humidity is fine at 90 % for fruiting. I would maybe move the light up to keep the block from drying to much and prop open the lid for air flow.

thanks for that, did you get that the t5 light is on top of the bin that is upside down? probably about 2 ft above the mushroom block? should it be farther away? and ya, others gave me the good advice to leave the plastic on also, it was just right after I removed it, because I was impatient. I will next time for sure. I'll take a picture of the setup.
Luv your garden setup, btw.

This is my setup as is, btw. nothing special, had the bins handy, and I want the height of the two containers to do 5 gallon buckets and baskets/etc. I plan on changing over to a larger green house shelving unit soon, though. I am debating on putting a 107 cfm computer fan with a rheostat on this though. am growing oysters and think the airflow may be useful.

Well, I just ate my first children, and they were delicious.I have grokked them in fulness.
It turned out, the 'grey' oysters that I thought I was growing were actually 'white' oysters. I sauteed them with some butter and they tasted great. they were a bit , and just a bit chewy, but I cut them into strips, and they really turned out sort of like a noodle, which was great. they could surely be used as a noodle in fact...a really really good tasting noodle. I am not a health food nut or vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination, but these were good stuff to me. now to get proficient at growing them and have a lb around routinely to eat.

Next time toss them in olive oil and s&p and throw them on the grill. Let the outer edges char a bit, take it off and rest for a min or two. Very tasty.

ya...I love grilled mushrooms...truth is I am quite a foodie and into cooking.....but in this case, I got literally 4 not really huge mushrooms from the whole grow.... yes, I feel shame, but it is my first grow, and I am just thrilled to have any, but I obviously have some knowledge in growing to do. My first step is going to get myself a needed pressure cooker so I can have less contam problems. and will probably build a flow hood soon. well eventually.

Brighter light might help them develop more color.

thats what I had thought, that I wasn't using enough light, but nope using a 24 w 6500k light. it turns out it is actually white oyster mushrooms and wasn't grey oyster at all. don't think a brighter light would make white oysters turn color.

Well light, temperature and FAE have a huge effect on mushroom shape and coloration. My "grey" oyster can certainly appear "white" if temps aren't kept down into the low 60'sF. You may have a mislabeled culture. Certainly is a common experience, but it is not the only possibility.

I've noticed temps to make the most difference, but light factors in as well. Although wrong culture is certainly possible, coming from ebay you're lucky you got anything alive at all, and the fact that it's oysters as advertized is pretty amazing
Feels great to have your first edible grow under your belt though, doesn't it? The quality and amount of your mushrooms will only improve from here!

yes, it feels awesome, and it certainly 'hooks' you...or at least me. My problem is I literally at this point in time want like 1/2LB. ave per day. I'll get there, and I am slowly setting up growing repetitive cycles I hope. build up my spawns to inoculate enough substrate to get my roll on, and start banging things out steadily I hope. I am worried about winter ending and it getting to warm.
As for my last grow, it really was white oyster....I ordered it and it only said 'oyster'on ebay. lol...You know, when I said I was a newb, I wasn't lying.... I seen those grow kit things and just thought "Oh, I'll just get some mycelium, toss it into straw and it'll just magically sprout mushrooms for me" when I did a search it mentioned plugs, for real cheap so thats what I ordered right there and then, and ran with it.

It hooked me, that's for sure. Those first pins were the most amazing thing ever. Not hard at all to get a steady supply going for yourself, just PC grain every weekend and spawn it to whatever you want. Oysters turn-around quick, I was eating them at least a couple times/week all summer. And I was growing reishi and all kinds of other stuff in between. Try lion's mane next, it's super easy and quick, and probably one of my favorites

I need to get a PC.... fairly expensive though and doing my research. Of course I'd love a all American, but....$...so I was thinking about a Presto 01781 23-Quart Pressure Canner and Cooker new for $69.

Money is an issue for me too, so I got the Presto (whatever one they carry at Walmart, I don't know the model). It's worked really well for me so far. 7 quarts at a time is about all I need.
I'm sure it won't last a lifetime but it's lasted about a year and still doing great.
