quickest mushroom to decompose stumps?
    #19352704 - 12/31/13 08:34 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Just out of interest - if someone had multiple stumps that they wanted as gone as possible as soon as possible and they were open to me trying to decompose them with a mushroom species which species would you recommend?

thanks.

Tramentes versicolor are tenacious little buggers.

I've read about a couple other real good ones, but can't for the LIFE of me remember which they were.  I'll get back to you if I can find...

Yeah T. versicolor is one good one though for sure.

Reishi doesn't seem to me like it really rots that well, it fruits and then leaves a super-solid block that doesn't do anything.  Maybe it does better on stumps?  Not if you're in colder areas though...

not sure about turkey tail, but even if it is a veracious eater, in practical purposes, isn't it going to still take a decade to eat a stump?

Maybe.  The birch polypore (piptoporus betulinus) rarely fruits more than a couple years on the same tree, as it's usually completely demolished by then.  Not sure if it will grow on other stumps though.  It's definitely softening my hardwood sawdust block, but not fruiting.  Push on it and it feels like a soft sponge though, after less than a month.

Might take a decade to eat a stump entirely, but we had a stump with accidental artists conk that was so soft after a couple years we were able to take it down to the ground with our riding lawnmower.

Hypholoma capnoides seems to do a job on conifers like Douglas Fir and some species of pine.

In N. Central Kentucky Tramets Versicolor seems to be the primary decomposer.

I went hunting early this past fall of 2013 and the first place I went was a recently fell tree ( 4 foot diameter hardwood from last fall 2012). The Versicolor was the clear champ.

The rest of my hunt sucked!

This 40ft long beast was covered with Turkey Tail. I suspect even the cut edge will be mostly filled by fall this New Year.

If you are just looking to get rid of the stumps as quick as possible mushrooms aren't the way to go. I would suggest drilling holes in them and stuffing them with fresh chicken or cow manure. You can even pour your own urine down them to quicken the process.

You could also try drilling slightly bigger holes, packing them with dirt and planting diakon radishes or some other large root vegetable. It is supposedly like blowing up a stump with TNT in slow motion...

If you just want mushrooms then turkey tail, reishi or oyster seems like the way to go.

Good info - I was reading about some of that stuff when searching.  So the theory is the nitrogen in the manure/urea attracts all kinds of stuff that hastens the decay, pretty much right?

Yep, it's composting 101; you want to maintain a 1:25 to 1:30 N:C ratio in a compost pile for ideal decomposition. I would think it should be a little higher for breaking down solid wood.
