found a caterpillar today inside an artichoke. UPDATE: Pics in OP

Little guy survived two days in my fridge.
I took him from poverty to a 4 star resort inside a mason jar. With the news of my friend passing today, I think its only right to let this little guy turn into a beautiful butterfly (hopefully not a moth)
Anyone have experience with caterpillars? Any advice is nice. He has some lettuce hes been munching on and some twigs.

make sure there is air holes. get a few twigs and leaves. even better if you take a branch (a small one) with a leaf or two on it. good to go.
maybe a cotton ball with water in there? not sure, but the rest is easy. dont leave in direct sunlight.
sit and wait. enjoy.

I took a small pill bottle, cut it in half and put some lettuce and then surrounded the space around that with cotton so he doesn't drown. I put a few twigs up and a leaf on the soil and an artichoke leaf.
I would like to get a bigger area for him. Hes tiny si I think I have a few days to set him up a new bigger home.

I say this with the utmost respect: probably best to google and do some research on it (if you haven't already). That being said I think that is awesome you spared its life. He/she totally deserves a fighting chance. Keep us updated! Pics along the way? You are awesome. For all we know this could be your friend reincarnated :-)

Pimp out the cage, put a bunch of stuff in there but make sure there is room. Also make sure there are plenty of places for it to hang it's chrysalis (cocoon) when it's ready to go. See if you can identify it! Also, does it have a name yet?
Also, water is essential.

I guess it would be cool to say I watched a caterpillar change forms. Idk, when it fell out o the artichoke I just felt like I needed to take care of it. I hope I can.

Why not feed it artichoke leaves?
How big is this thing? It is almost certainly a moth, btw.Quote:

Can almost guarantee it's a moth. IME, very few caterpillars found on fruits/veggies are of the butterfly variety.
As for advice, you might wanna give him some artichoke if you want him to live.. Caterpillars tend to seek out specific plants. For different reasons, some may be okay eating non-native plants, some may not be.

i wonder if you can treat the butterfly like a pet when you're done bonding with it. that would be great going around with your personal butterfly.
