We Are On The Road To Extinction
    #19353130 - 12/31/13 10:58 PM (10 years, 30 days ago)

Intro: I realize most people don't give to shits about the environment. I honestly think it'll be bitter sweet when this race that produces so much love and hate simultaneously, goes extinct. I'm sure we won't be missed by other creatures on this planet besides dogs and cats. I kinda like the idea of mother nature kicking humanities ass (sometimes).:canthelpbutlaugh:
Within the next hundred or so years, it seems that this planet will be quite uncomfortable to humans to live on. (much more so than now)
...
The cause will be from a cocktail of environmental destruction and resulting wars. Most of which could have been prevented if our race wasn't such greedy fucktards.

...
Exhibit A:
40% decline in phytoplankton populations since 1950
Phytoplankton are a critical part of our planetary life support system. They produce half of the oxygen we breathe, draw down surface CO2, and ultimately support all of our fisheries.

....
Exibit B:
Global average temperatures will rise at least 4°C by 2100 (7.2-11 degrees Fahrenheit!!!)

http://phys.org/news/2013-12-cloud-mystery-global-temperatures-4c.html#ajTabs
"We have five times as much oil and coal and gas on the books as climate scientists think is safe to burn. We'd have to keep 80 percent of those reserves locked away underground to avoid that fate."
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/global-warmings-terrifying-new-math-20120719page=2#ixzz2p7dX4iA1

...
Exhibit C:
Oil and water starting to become a huge concern globally
"If we take the $92 barrel cost in 2011 at the 90th percentile of production and increase it by 7% a year (arguably we should be using 12% per year), the real cost will be $169 barrel in 2020, and $467 a barrel in 2035."

http://ourfiniteworld.com/2012/11/13/iea-oil-forecast-unrealistically-high-misses-diminishing-returns/
....
Consequences of Our Idiocy
Currently (only 1.45 Fahrenheit increase):
.
Ocean is 30% more acidic
Hurricanes and other storms are becoming stronger
Increase in starvation, wars (middleeast), forest fires
Economic recessions that WILL become a reoccurring thing

2050

33% of all plant and animal species will be extinct
50% of Amazon Rainforest destroyed
MORE WAR over resources

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/global-warmings-terrifying-new-math-20120719?page=4
....
This is only the tip of the iceberg folks. Currently 200,000 acres of rainforest is destroyed everyday. That;s just one example of the idiocy and greed of this race that astounds me. Nevertheless, there is an amazing supply of love and compassion to be found in many peoples hearts. Either way our race has a massive, pissed off grizzly, named mother nature charging at us full speed; we better hope technology and new wisdom provides a silver pellet for our slingshot. Alas, we've always tried to control nature and its never worked well in the slightest. Now we're about to get a taste of our own medicine.
I'm glad I got this off my chest.
Happy fuckin 2014:foreveralone:

None of that supports the notion that humanity is going extinct at all.  Extinction is not the same as the end of civilization, massive starvation or a drastic change to humanity's way of life.  The human population is still increasing and groups of humans have already demonstrated an ability to live in climates as diverse as the arctic to the sahara.  Humanity is not on the road to extinction.  At least, not anytime soon and not because of climate change.  In ~700 million years the oceans will evaporate away no matter what we do.

hmmm i guess it really depends on the coming years and how large of an impact this warming has on crops. though im glad you agree that civilization will probably be seriously disrupted.
luckily i will be off the grid by then. this is a disturbing but important subject. ignoring the issue is at the heart of this progressing catastrophie

Ignoring the fact that most people aren't ignoring it is possibly even worse. Get your head out of the sand.

most americans are definitley not making any significant effort to cut there emissions. although i cant speak much for the rest of the world but global emnisions are still increasing despite global record high temperatures occuring frequently

That doesn't mean the issue is being ignored though. It's a big oil tanker that takes a lot of time to turn around.

I hope we go extinct...

--------------------
And thus begins the  reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

I don't think so. But we may have to adjust our goals/ideals. Now, we're still locked into the belief/expectation/hope that we can somehow revert to the world as it was, say, 150 years ago. That won't work - the ecosystem is in constant motion and it will stay that way. Species will go extinct, other species will replace the ones that are very successful now. The longer mankind lives to witness this (and tell their posterity about it), the more we'll have to take into account that the world around us changes - whether we cause this change or not.

So my fear isn't so much that we're doing too little, too late. My fear is that we're doing the wrong things. We're focusing too much on trying to restore things to a former state. While in fact, we should be focusing on accommodating to a world that is different from the one we knew. One in which we'll have to put in more effort to make fresh water available, one in which we may have to move to different places or in any case deal with floods and storms, and one in which our favorite foods from the wild are no longer available and will have to replaced with something else. These things are doable. We can accommodate these changes, as long as we focus our efforts on that instead of trying to revert the changes that have occurred already.
