What is this contam?
    #19352178 - 12/31/13 06:15 PM (10 years, 30 days ago)

I looked around a bit, couldn't figure it out myself.  This is supposed to be hemlock reishi mycelium that I cloned from a wild specimen(the plate doesn't show signs of this contaminant).  I haven't ever grown it before but I know it isn't right.  The pic isn't the best, but its the best I can do.  The contam looks sort of like baking soda to me.

I really want to know what it is because it hit all 12 jars :P  I didn't do G2G, I just took 12 agar slices and plopped em in.

Ugh! Yeast huh.  Yeast doesn't form any airborne spores right?  So basically this tells me my agar plate is probably Effed after all, or I somehow got the same contam into 12 jars some other way :P  Which doesn't seem likely, my sterile technique is way better than it used to be.  Guess I'll do one more transfer and see if it comes clean or not.

When things go wrong they go soooooo wrong.  Glad my other hobbies are more forgiving.

Smells good! Not good as in like healthy mycelium though. Smells sweet, can't really say what it specifically smells like though.  My nose isn't too great, only one operational nostril and all.

"Yeast" is a term for a particular single-celluled fungal lifestyle. There are many kinds of yeasts that are not particularly related, and some do form airborne spores. But if it got into all 12 jars it's probably hiding out in your plate too.

Might be worth pouring hot agar over a sample of your agar, on the theory that a multicellular critter like reishi is better at climbing through to air than yeast is.

I'd try spawning at least a couple of the jars anyway, I've had blue oyster jars look like that and grow just fine.  Reishi is tough too, who knows it might win.

Agreed, though I'd suggest keeping it separate from your other grows.

Oysters are unusual in their ability to over run contams with ease. I'd still try and fruit but as above keep it seperate might be a good idea

Yeah, reishi too, I don't know about yeast but it loves to eat bacteria.

That contam looks pretty prevalent.   I am not sure I would waste sub on it or not.

For 50 cents in fuel pellets, I would, just to see.  You should have seen the bacteria infested jar of reishi that spawned my protein bottle reishi grow.

But yeah, depends on what your growing on.  Wouldn't waste more than a couple bucks on it that's for sure.

Didn't know about reishi eating bacteria. I used to play mycelium wars with a regular albino oyster strain I had. It ate everything lol. Compared to Lepista nuda which dies back even near bacterial satellite colonies making it somewhat challenging to isolate from a wild print.

I just supplemented a bag of reishi, and bucket-tek pasteurized it instead of sterilizing.  It colonized but smelled like rotten fish.  3 days later the smell was completely gone, and it started fruiting.  It's doing better than it's unsupplemented, uninfected counterpart right now.
