I've found myself wondering how people of the 20th century that lived through the change called the years though. I'm sure it's known, but it's now known to me.

Eighteen fourteen, nineteen fourteen, twenty fourteen. It's a pretty obvious pattern. The first two numbers are said together.

koraks said: Come to think of it, saying "twenty ..." isn't consistent with "nineteen fifty four" at all, since the "nineteen" doesn't refer to the numbers 19, but is the abbreviation of nineteen hundred. You don't say "twenty hundred fourteen" either, so "two thousand fourteen" makes more sense if you think about it
That's about what I figure. "Two thousand fourteen" is only one syllable more than "Twenty-fourteen" anyway. Just think of all that time I'm wasting saying it the longer way, it boggles the mind.

News flash: we were starting a new millennium 14 years ago. You're a bit late to the party. Also: millennium. Millennia is the plural if you're against the whole 'millenniums' thing.
