Introduce myself

Dear all,
Apparently I need 10 posts to see certain topics. So I'll start off introducing myself. I am a 40 year old male from the Netherlands. I am a biologist and when not working I tend to be busy with bees, dogs, mantises and growing flowers and such. Years ago I had very nice (spectacular) experiences with magic mushrooms, I want to do this once again so I am reading up on this site to grow them.
I have one failed attempt with Paneaolus in the last month. Standard grain to horse dung cased with 50/50+ all at 28 degrC but internal air movement by pc fan dried the casing more than I thought. Second attempt, same set up but no fan and with homemade reptimist humidifier is looking promising, casing colonised and waiting for pins.
All the best, Podenco

Yeah, we love our sciences around these parts. I wish you the best of luck with all of your future growing endeavors. I've got a question though, why don't you just grow p.cubes?

Paneaolus, nice! Those are slightly advanced as far as I have read. Best of luck to you on your grow man. You should be fine if you're a biologist.

Thanks.
I know of other biologist who were very into mind altering substances, chance they are here too. But for most it was a phase, they tripped a few good times during university and are now busy with their kids.
I should have choosen cubensis, I probably would have fruits already but I had Copelandia in the 90ties and it was very potent. I want the most active compound for the least amount of mushroom.
Growing Panaeolus seems trickier than cubensis and success is probably an experience thing, how to tweak to get the optimal conditions in vitro. But the process is cheap, if this batch does not work out I have enough horse poo left.

Welcome Podenco, you will succeed, rarely is anyones first attempt a success. Though, Panaeolus as a first try was rather foolish, they can be tricky-- and are far less forgiving, especially when dealing with the FAE. Your knowledge may prove useful to many. Again, welcome

Yeah Podenco, I wish I had some advice for you man.
I haven't attempted a Pan grow yet, although I will be soon. Actually found a ~year old Pan print I couple weeks ago that I had forgotten about. I plated the spores on a few dishes, and I think I'm starting to see a little bit of growth.

I'll stick around for sure.
Getting colonised rye and horse poo/vermiculite was very easy up to now. Last time the casing went too dry, I misted it too lightly for the amount of air circulation. The containers were in a modified terrarium that only gets to say 80% RH. Now containers are in a TiT with a thick layer of seramis and mist blown in by an aquarium air pump. Things are much wetter now.

i've never tried pan subs, but for me pan trops were way different feeling than cubes.
OP what do you know about mantises? I've been trying to find literature on what micro-nutrients mantises need.

I'm no expert in the field, but I did raise some Manti at one point, and they all did extremely well on just live crickets(food-wise) It's possible that I have no idea what I'm talking about. And if you buy a dozen crickets, you can simply feed them and they'll reproduce faster than any amount of mantis could consume them.

nah i want to make vegan mantis food but i don't know what kind of things they need other than the basic fat/protien.
some people think they need to eat chitin to make their own skin. other people disagree.
i figure since they can live so long on a monofood source hopefully they don't need to many micro-nutrients.

I only know one mantis species well (as I breed them), the orcid mantis Hymenopus.
I am not aware of research done on micro-nutrients for mantisses. Being predators they can thrive on only a few prey species (like cats and snakes). The thing is to give the prey (flies and other insects) a good and varied diet. My mantisses live mainly on honey bees, which are kind of a complete diet for a mantis that looks like a flower, but I feed "flesh flies" too which have a different nutrition as larvae then bees. The younger instars get fruit flies that are gut loaded with fresh fruit and tomatoes. My stock is thriving till now.
Oh yeah...the Netherlands. We have the dumbest laws lately. Mushrooms are illegal to sell but sclerotia are legal.

I have Hymenopus coronatus. I like it a lot, I just get such a kick from agressive mimicry haha.
If I fed crickets to something I would make sure they had a proper diet before they become prey. Fruit, fish food and a complete human baby cereal of sorts. My fruitflies are on a mix of banana and infant cereal and before I give them to mantis I put them on fresh fruit for 2 days to replace the sour old food in their gut.
