Cutting open spawn bags to fruit
    #19350365 - 12/31/13 09:16 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So I noticed that you guys usually cut x's in your spawn bags when you're ready to fruit them. I'm using a greenhouse and starting my first non-cubensis grow right now so excuse my beginner question, but why don't you completely remove the bag and put it inside the greenhouse? That would allow more surface area for fruiting and it wouldn't mutilate your bag. And evaporation of moisture from the surface of the substrate is a huge pinning trigger and I feel like the bag may prevent that. Clearly you guys get great results and I'm not arguing with you, I just don't see the point. If there's a good reason for it then of course I'll do it, I just would like to avoid it if possible.

The more surface exposed = greater surface for pinning.  So you'll get a lot of small mushrooms, but if you cut a couples X's, the pins that form there will likely grow into larger mushrooms.

There are species like Shiitake and reishi where I remove the whole bag, but for mushrooms that tend to be smaller with huge pinsets like oysters, it's best to restrict pinning

I tried even exposing the top for oysters,

Even that much surface area allows way too many pins, which need to be removed.

I find I can actually reuse the bags once.
So, the first time a bag is used is for shiitake, then rolled off and used for lion's mane or oysters which benefit from punctures or holes in the bag.

Holy shit! That's amazing! What would you recommend for beech and maitake mushrooms?

A bag left on will prevent too much evaporation off the substrate, allowing more of the water to go into mushroom production rather than into the air. one more benefit to leaving the bag on

True! Maybe I'll spawn into an oven bag so I don't have to ruin my spawn bags. Thanks guys, as always, you are incredibly helpful.

I know people usually expose the top for maitake. As for Beech, I have not yet found a productive enough strain for experimenting, but Aleon seems to have it pretty figured out, he fruits from holes in the bags.

Awesome, thanks for the link! There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information on beech mushrooms, but it'll be fun to experiment.

If this is your problem it is most likely where you are growing the mushrooms. With 95 % humidity and misting the blocks you should not be having that problem.

You could case the blocks as well even if they don't require it. Like this. I live in a pretty dry climate and can accomplish this out doors in the shade.

yes, i live in a very dry area and keeping a high humidity environment proves difficult especially in the winter. I can run my humidifier more frequently and achieve 90-95% but then i have excessive water pooling on the floor. :uhoh:

i find oysters grow happily even at 65% humidity.

How exactly do you achieve 95% humidity? I am running my CVS brand impeller cool mist humidifier 24/7 with damp perlite and a fan and I'm only getting 70% humidity. It's driving me crazy!

I get 80-95% in a psuedo Martha with just an ultrasonic humidifier.

Maitake need lots of humidity -- nearly 100%. Past attempts have failed because of low humidity.

I just can't seem to get it over 70%. Maybe my hygrometer is broken. It's 5 years old and I've used it in many reptile cages.

If it's got a calibration screw (meaning it's not electronic), you can recalibrate it simply by leaving it wrapped in a damp towel for a while. It should read 100%.

Gotcha, it's a very cheap hygrometer. You can move the dial by twisting the cover. It probably got bumped a couple years ago. I wrapped it in wet toilet paper and moved the dial to 100%. I'm still probably gonna buy a more reliable one.
