Is that the normal amount of casing you add? The depth? It seems like a thin layer of grain, then (almost) equal amount of casing?
Not giving you a hard time just curious.

Haha, I doubt that I have half a clue lol. I have late cased bulk subs with straight coir with success. I personally think that coir has very little nutes...only slightly more than peat. I am not sold that there is much nutes in coir seeing how you can let it out damp for months and it won't mold over. I think (With "coir" bulk) a bulk of yield is based on the amount of grain spawn, the amount of water in the substrate and the total surface area of the fruiting area. Just my personal opinion.
Funny as it sounds, I was in the process of running an isolate in 2 tubs...one with coir/verm and one with peat/verm to compare output. Though I think there will be differences in yield, I doubt they will be as dramatic as some believe.
That's an interesting test you have going there. Keep us posted with the results. As far as I know, the reason coir doesn't contam is because spores have a hard time developing on it, not because it lacks nutrients. If you put a tiny amount of trich mycelium on it, it would tear through the coir.

So I should probably fruit this thing when I see like 20-30% of the surface covered with mycelium aye?

Trich will rip through peat also. Another thing that I pondered is that 50/50% peat/verm casing will be fully colonized by the end of the first flush. Pretty much same for the coir counterpart.

I would. Im guessing that you may have some issues with side pins.

Side pins will be fine. I'm really just curious how it's going to behave.

Soo, is that the normal amount of 'casing' you put, or what? Looks kinda deep...

I just microwaved the shit out of some coir/verm closer to a 60/40 mix, it's definitely sterilized not pasteurized. 3 quarts of colonized grain not dunked and then a big thick layer of casing. We'll see what happens.
Note-I am still new to cultivating mushrooms , I am making mistakes and learning from my mistakes. I will never stop learning and making mistakes.
I did this exact setup only difference I soaked my grains and it was my best performer so far.

Bet the mycelium rips right through that coir.

I just threw this together with no real rhyme or reason. It is pretty deep though.

Keep us posted on the results. Im very interested in how that will turn out. Iv often considered trying the same thing

I'm thinking I would have better results had I just mixed the two together rather than laying the (bulk substrate used as a casing) on top.
It's 3 quarts of spawn in there so if I get higher yields than my usual tub that's probably why. I often use 2q spawn and 2q sub in those shoeboxes or sometimes 1q spawn 3q sub.
This casing was about 1/2 quart which still came out pretty darn thick.

1 spawn to 2 sub has never failed me but I'm a g2g fanatic so I always have lots of spawn on hand to try new things with.

first signs of mycelium poking through the casing today

Well the top is like 30-40% I don't have any room to put it into fruiting conditions so I just have the lid ajar. Lots of side pins at the grain/casing line
