I found these yesterday. They were growing on the side of the road in Massachusetts I founfd them at 5:00 pm next to a rock wall. They were part of a huge cluster of mushrooms growing out in all directions. They appeared to be grwing from the ground. I picked the cluster it weighs about 5 pounds. I thought they are gyms by the ring around the stem, and some of the caps are 6in. wide or more. They are definetley rusty red color. (Edit: Text added from other thread by Toxic Man)

Get a spore print, and let us know what color it comes out. Also, slice one of them ni half vertically, and let us know how the gills are attached to the stem. Then, take one half of the sliced mushroom and scrape the inside with your knife edge to bruise it - let us know what color it turns (if it turns a new color - it could take up to an hour).
Happy mushrooming!

That looks like a gym. I'd sure like to see you find one! I find gyms that look very similar here often. Waiting for the print!

Here is the spore print and a cross sectional view of my find. *I will try to put the whole cluster of the scanner!!. The print appears to be brown/rusty. I have several large mushrooms like these from the same cluster. Thanks for your help. Let me know if I did the print incorrectly.

I'm not sure what you did to get your print, but you got some spores to drop. With big mushrooms like the gymnos, I've found it helps if after you've placed the cap on the paper, to cover it with a large glass/ ceramic mixing bowl or casserole dish (or the cover) and let it sit for a few days. I usually wet a finger and dabb a little moisture on the cap. Not enough to get the paper wet, but enough to keep the humidity up somewhat. I'll usually make several prints using caps at different stages of growth, to make sure I catch'em at the right time. Don't know if this works for everyone, but it works for me. Nice find BTW Even if it's not an active gymno, you're heading in the right direction

They dont smell very much at all. I put my nose right up to it, and smell deepy and it has a slight sweet odor. However, if you are in the same room with them, you can detect this unique odor of mushrom. I took apart the cluster, and they are drying outside in the sun right now. *In light of everyones comments, Do you guys believe *I have enough evidence to try a small taste test? *Im not familiar with the species at all, and not sure if there are any adverse effects if its a gym, but not the right gym. What would you do?

Maybe I'm overly cautious, but if it was me, I'd wait for a more conclusive i.d. Just in case. Try to find more, in different stages of growth, that might help with a closer identification.

I agree with Mr_Mushrooms - I think you have some sort of Gymnopilus there. It's a bit of an odd specimen, so it'd require a really detailed examination to determine species.
A few key features you should note: Is there a ring on the stem (it's best to check multiple specimens - especially young ones); taste a piece and see if it tastes bitter (it should be really strong - spit it out after tasting); determine if it's growing on conifer or hardwood.
Happy mushrooming!
