SGFC - drill bit size

From the teks I've read about, most suggest using a bit between 1/8 and 1/4. I have a basic drill bit set, but I also have 1/16, 1/32, and 1/64 for small-scale wood working projects. Would it pay off to use a smaller drill bit and drill more holes? Anybody have info on the size of the holes in relation to humidity and FAE? What appears to work best for you? Does it really matter at all?

You could get away with it but it's best to use 1/4" holes as per the tek. The shotgun works best when properly built.

If you don't know the answer then pick a tek and follow it to a T. If your tek says 1/4 inch every 6 in. On all 6 sides then do that.

Yeah just go to a hardware store and try and find a single bit, might be 1-3$

I use a "Fuller Bit". It has a tapered twist drill with a super sharp end. They are pricey though. The way that they are designed, they cannot break the plastic, drill a super fast, clean hole, and it will pay for itself in one job.

They will last and last in plastic.

I experimented with every hole size possible before settling on 1/4" (6mm). Best performance was with 3/8" holes, but you have to mist more. Since most people are lazy I settled on the 1/4" size because in most cases the terrarium can be handled with a misting or two per day. RR

How many times a day with 3/8" holes would you recommend misting?

Depends on the humidity in your house, how much perlite you used, how many cakes/substrate volume is in the SGFC. Best bet use your eyes and mist when you need to. My guess is probably 2-3 extra times per day but that's just a guess.

There is a 1/4" bit on the drop down menu on the page I linked to. It won't stay there so it goes back to the top. Scroll down the list and you will see the 1/4". That's what I use.
There are 7 sizes between 1/4" and 3/8" to choose from on the drop down list. Choose the one that's right for you. 5/16" is looking like it's the sweet spot based on RR's findings.

If you're worried about cracking the plastic don't drill like a dingus or use a block of wood as a backing in a creative way to prevent it from happening.

I already have 3 of them in big tubs. I used 1/4" holes. A cheap drill bit tends to crack the plastic if you don't take your time. I was told years ago that a guy on here recommended Forstner bits for cleaner holes and less cracking of the plastic. I used them but they were way too slow when you have a Fuller bit sitting right there.
Whatever works.
The block of wood idea would work as well.

Nah, I really wasn't worried about cracking my tubs or considering breaking away from the teks. I just wanted the technical info about the 1/4 working best and was curious if drilling more holes with a smaller bit would be better. Thanks for responding, RR.

Not to hijack this thread, but exactly how much does room humidity affect that within the SGFC? It's pretty cold around here and I'm sitting at about 25%. I've contemplated buying a vaporizer for my FC area, but I'm not sure if it's necessary.

You might have to rehydrate your perlite more often every other week or more and also mist more. I personally like to aim for above 30% in my house and a small humidifier isn't a bad idea just don't put it near the SGFC but rather across the room.
