Coco coir question
    #19348455 - 12/30/13 08:36 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey y'all, when talking about bulk substrate ratios, the amount of coir is almost alway referenced in number of bricks.

How big in grams are these bricks?  250g? 650g?  What's the general concensus on this?

:takingnotes:

Anywhere from 500 grams to 700. Just get a brick of coir, eco-earth is the brand I use. They vary in size when I get a 3 pack.

the bricks I use hydrate to make about 8 quarts of substrate. that seems easier for figuring out spawn to sub ratios than grams. assuming you use quart jars for spawn.

Awesome, thanks so much.

That being said, a simple coir/verm bulk substrate would have 2 full quarts of verm mixed in per brick?

And some added gypsum for good measure?

Currently hydrating half a brick of coir, I have 4 jars that are fully colonized of a cubensis variety.  I'm assuming that will be more than enough spawn... but for the life of me, i keep getting stuck in the details.

Quarts of spawn are full quarts of spawn?  These are barely filled more than half.

Or are these more like mycology quarts when refering to quantity of spawn in quarts.

Hit the bong earlier, i'm really getting bogged down in the details, lol. :frown:

I'm assuming mine do too, if the bricks you use are 650g's as well lol.  The reason i'm asking is that on the canadian amazon, there are 2 different sizes available.  250g and 650g.

So if I have 4 quarts of spawn ready, half a brick of coir should get me 4 quarts, plus 1 quart of vermiculite to air it out.  4:5 spawn:bulk ratio, sound good?

Some people add 3 quarts of verm, I like to use 2, so use 2 lol

Gypsum is always a good thing to add

4 quarts of spawn is fine, I have used less, and if you arent sure, just don't use all your coir/verm

Halfway is okay, most people use 3/4 of a quart. I use a almost full quart, I have a technique where I roll the jar so the grains I G2G surround the new grains and colonize from the outside, in. Works great, good luck amigo!!!

4:5 is a lot of spawn I use 1:2 witch is still fairly high. 3/4brick of coir - 2 quarts of verm and about a cup of gypsum to your 4 quarts of spawn.

4/5 as in 1/1.25

Thing is however, my 4 spawn jars aren't full, they're a bit more than half.

I'm glad you asked this, I was planning to ask the same thing, there's a hydroponics store near me that sells bulk coir.
