Are there mushroom species that one should not cultivate outdoors?
    #19346332 - 12/30/13 01:35 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Long time lurker (almost 10 years!) first time posting. Forgive me if this has been asked already.

I'm finally getting into the cultivation of edible mushrooms as I have access to a fair amount of acreage of mixed wood forest. I've got a few stumps plugged with shiitake and want to move forward with a good variety of mushrooms.

My hesitation is that I might introduce a mushroom species that could blight or become invasive in the area. I've read that there are some fairly aggressive mushroom species, eg: Armillaria. Are there others that I should avoid? Woodlovers and oyster have a reputation for being aggressive could they potentially cause problems?

The trees that are common in in my part of the rain forest are Alder, Doug Fir, Hemlock, Big Leaf Maple and Sitka Spruce.

you don't really need to worry about that as the real problematic fungi to plants are not widely available through spawn suppliers. Some saprotrophic fungi get accused of being parasitic because they can be found fruiting on living tress, but most are really just decomposing dead wood inside the tree.
