are these peruvianus? tersheckii?
    #19345672 - 12/30/13 10:05 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I bought these seedlings off amazon. They were advertised as a 4 pack but I got 5. I dont know much about cacti, I mainly grow bridgesii. The one in the back left looks like tersheckii to me.

Its hard to see from the picture but the cactus in question has yellow spines. the others are of a red tone. they are all still the same?

It could be natural variation within which ever species they turn out to be.

I bought them over the summer but they could probably be over a year.

tersheckii do not grow in a columnar form until they are at least several years old.

Terscheckii seedlings look identical to other trichocereus species. They grow almost the same for a few years, then stall and grow cylindrical and then after several years, start to grow columnar.

Grow them in good spot like 3years or more, then you should see yourself what species they are.

Fertilize and water at summer, keep dry and cool over winter.. Later on the seedling starts to take it's form and shape.

completely disagree.  for a few months they look the same, but even at an extremely young age there are huge differences between most trichs, which grow straight up, and terscheckii, which grows into a fat little ball for several years before growing vertically.

5 month old terscheckii:

5 month old bridgesii, peruvianus, and bridg x pach hybrids:

the same plants now after almost 5 years...

terscheckii:

bridg, peru, hybrids:

here is a shot with bridgesii and terscheckii for comparison.  they are exactly the same age.  the seeds were sown at the same time.  in fact, the bridgesiis have already been chopped several times for propagation.

here is a shot with a t. huasca next to the terscheckii, same exact age, seeds sown at the same time.

Op, are the areas where the spines protrude fuzzy?

This doesn't correlate with my experience or the old guy I know that's been growing them for 30 years. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for yours.

Interesting. Yrat's experience is closer to mine. May differences in the genetic populations of the US vs. Australia?

I'm pretty sure that these are just separate phenos playing out. I'm sorry that I didn't really explain my reasoning in questioning the species of the cacti, I have no botanical knowledge to base my claims on. Anyway, a few months ago I found an envelope in my room labeled 'T. tersheckii' I honestly have no idea how it ended up in my room other than that it came with my recent cacti order. I assumed it did and that perhaps the fifth cactus was a terscheckii.

Here is a closer look at the cactus:

It's just different variety of trichocereus sp. Not terscheckii. IMO.

I find they stay globular for many years too. The seedlings were a bit more rounded, more squat, than peruvianus.

A recently dropped tray

The terscheckii here is older than the surrounding pach/peru
