Mixed grains--is using up "odds and ends" ok?
    #19345487 - 12/30/13 08:48 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I'm curious about substrate formulation and was wondering if folks here could help shed some light on things.

A lot of the TEKs rely on using a single kind of grain--and from the results some of you guys are posting it works great!  Rye, popcorn....  But I read the Alien Substrate TEK that uses a mix of whole grain quinoa, whole brown rice, verm and millet and flax meal.  The claim was that this mix is "balanced".

I tend to believe this, but I'm not sure it's based in science or based in the folk lore I picked up being a hardcore organic veggie gardener and compost snob.  Especially for composting, I ALWAYS get the ultimate results when I compost the widest range of feedstocks together.  The idea is that you provide a kind of smorgasbord for the microbes and they take care of the rest.

I'll get to the point--I have a bunch of odds and ends laying around that I personally will never eat.  I mean really, what am I going to do with rye grain or brown rice flour? So I was curious--is there a problem if you just prepare the materials seperately (as if you were going to use them alone), and then just mix them in any proportion?  For example, make a BRF/Verm mix, and mix it with pre-simmered and rinsed popcorn?

It seems to me if the final moisture content was ok the mycellium wouldn't care a bit.  And it seems there should be a benefit to diversifying the nutrients you feed to the mycellium (minerals, micronutes...).

Sorry for the long winded question--just looking for a plan for how to use up several bags of "this and that" I have laying around before it goes rancid on me!
