do my brf jars need still air or to "breathe"
    #19345356 - 12/30/13 07:45 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hi. I've been searching and searching for the right answer to my question and I keep reading differing opinions and no hard answer so I apologize if I missed something but I have to ask considering I've had my jars colonizing for over a week now.

Brf cakes. 1/2 pint jars. 4 innoc holes. 1 cc per jar. Colom rust spore strain. Temps are at 73f. 7 jars in sterilite tub with foil covering pretty tight at the moment.
I'd like to add that they have been colonizing for 9 days and they are turning white very quick so I guess I'm doing something right

So here's my question. I need to know if jars need still air and a buildup of co2 for proper colonizing or if I should have the foil off and allow the jars to breathe. I have read numerous people argue both ways and leaves me confused. thanks in advance.

The foil gets removed after sterilization and stays off.

Leaving it on should not hinder GE, but taking it off will help the dry verm layer remain dry and effective.

Whoops I should have clarified.I removed the foil off the jars after sterilization. I am referring to foil that I covered the sterilite box with. I read covering the box builds co2 higher and helps with colonization. True?

They do that in the jar......place the jars on a shelf in a room until fully colonized.

No need to worry about humidity or co2 just yet....

False.

A high CO2 level actually hinders colonization.  You want the CO2 high in your jars because it helps to impede competitor organisms, but the jars themselves should be sitting on an open shelf exposed to air and ambient room lighting.
