What does blackness mean?
    #19345248 - 12/30/13 06:57 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

After drying, many of my mushrooms have a blackish tint.  What does this mean?

Bruising probably. Or could be a rot. Smell them.

Are they squishy and spongy?

They smell fine.  Not so much spongy although they are a bit squishy.  My main questions are why is this happening and if they are still safe to consume?

Sounds like bruising....they are fine... turning blue is normal for psilocybe mushrooms... sometimes they blue so dark that they appear black...a picture would help us greatly

In the car last night immidiately after i picked them, I had them against the vent awhile in a paper bag which dried them very well.  When I got home, I left them behind my Xbox over night as it gets quite toasty back there and I took them off around 8:00am eastern time.

Pretty much.

It could still be either or. Do they break when you bend them?

Does this help?  The stems do not crack.  They do break though.

Just looks like bruising to me...you should be fine...though your method of drying is an ultra fail... just put them in front of a fan in a container so they don't blow away...you don't need heat

Eh I've eaten ones with slight rot. I put em in an open iven with a fan because they are very difficult to get cracker dry. Was about an 1/8 worth and didn't even notice an increase in nausea. But that's just my experience. You would be able to tell by the smell though. Its def a little off.

If they're rotten they'll smell bad. They shouldn't rot though in a paper bag or in the open. They should just slowly dry out.

When mushrooms go off, the smell isn't subtle.  It looks like bruising and spores to me.

I'd make a tea with them, just to be safe (and also because making a tea is one of the best ways to consume them anyway).

Blackness? It means everything and nothing, man.

its probably because some people feel that the low extraction rate isn't worth teas benefits. I usually drink the shroom sludge with the tea, which i believe gives most of the total potency.and even with drinking sludge, its still far more palatable.

No need do drink the sludge. The alkaloids are soluble in hot water so pretty much everything will be in the water not in the fruits.

I never get good trips from tea...no matter how much material I steep...idk why.. I used to think it was the heat but peeps around here insist heat is fine...so idk why...but tea barely ever works for me.

Next to a pc, a dehydrator is the next piece of myco-eq you should buy. They are not that expensive, and work fast.
