I think I want to pick up meth as a hobby

I haven't done any math in years but for some reason I have an itch to do math shit.. Don't even know where to start though in terms of where I'm at in math.
I remember most of the algebraic stuff from my early college days if that counts for anything...Would picking up a physics book be too much?

I suppose you should pretend to a local college that you want to become a student again so they give you math placement test. Then whatever class they would start you in is where you start. There's really no reason to take a math class as a class I guess, you can do it yourself with the text and an answers manual. I've never considered math a hobby, more of a requirement of a task I had to complete. I took calc 1 in college but have never in my life required anything more than what would be considered remedial algebra and fractions, and thats doing professional CPA type tax accounting for small businesses. But everyone needs a hobby and learning math will keep your mind sharp as a tack. Have fun bro.

Pick up a physics book and find out. A solid foundation is really important.

Pick up a trigonometry book... then after you have a solid understanding of trig go onto physics, more interesting than calculus anyway. Pretty neat stuff!

no, calculus is all about the rate of change

I know nuthin' about calculus, but if you want to study on some algebra based physics having a good grip on trigonometry will help you immensely

if you're just studying for fun, then i suggest you pick up a physics book but if you're really interested and see some d/dx of some form or a ∫ the d/dx basically represents the rate of change and the integral symbol ∫ represents an accumulation of parts from one point to another.
if you're interested in the math in physics you might wanna study a little calculus to understand the symbols they use in the physics books.

taking a placement test at your local community college would be your best bet. it shouldn't be more than 15$.
Goodluck! i recommend physics because of it's real world applications can be fun.

Calculus is actually a part of a branch of mathematics called 'analysis.' It provides ways to model problems in the phsyical world, and provides a way to relate algebraic equations to geometry, i.e. analytic geometry. Its used extensively in all branches of science.
But if you are going into physics or advanced engineering, you are going to find out that you will be using statistics far more than calculus. Calculus is just one tool of many, an important one though.

I like to watch vids about little tidbits of interesting information/conundrums about math and physics and science(y) stuff from channels like Numberphile or other related Youtube channels (sixty symbols, Minute Physics etc..) when I'm bored.
Not sure how that helps you start doing math for your own fun, but it can give you ideas; like shit to do with the mathematical method of making the flag of Nepal or figuring shit out about Sudoku/related mathematical games
To be honest though, I just like to ponder it. All these do is fill an interest in the meantime, but they really don't have any structure or curriculum to them. I feel like I should take a course or study an actual textbook or something to truly get anywhere with my understanding of it as a whole.

im beginning this too lately with math for a hobby, its actually pretty interesting. Especially geometry because the whole universe is written in it. You begin to see all the crazy patterns and almost coincidences in this type of math and it makes it so fun/interesting. Do it, you wont be unhappy.
If you study geometry, youll have a better chance at unlocking the secrets of the universe but theirs still a lot of hope in that with others too. If your into geometry, start with the flower of life! If not, start with E=MC2. Its not nearly as hard as people make it out to be.
You can learn as much as you want too so how willing are you to learn? The more you want to learn, the easier it is. Thats one of the best quotes I have ever given myself and it never failed yet. good luck!
Good Luck!

you just have to remember things like the order of operations
math training with a tutor can be very important
there are tons of ways to take something from one side of the equation and put it on the other, simplify, make common denominators etc.
I imagine people needing a lot of math background to do vectors, then the last third of the physics book uses some systems of equations, more vectors and some calc. Physic's I is passable but the other two were hard as balls, I never took them and I passed calc 3, discrete math and linear algebra
