What do you guys think this P.C's problem is?

My friend has a nice p.c. from 2007 he built with really nice parts in it besides maybe the mobo but anyway the gpu is still usuable because it was really expensive back then, anyway he is going to sell it. I said I'd give him 100bucks for it because
when you play a game on it the thing crashes and shuts off.
Do anyone think all it needs is a new power supply?
side story, he had to install windows 7 on it, because I updated the wrong graphics driver for it when it was messing up once lol...

honestly couldn't argue with you unless you had said hardrive, memory or cd-drive

i was in the same situation, lemme guess, its an AMD GPU. Yep, had to upgrade my MOBO and GPU.

Well more information is needed. When it crashes and shuts off, does the whole system completely power off like it was unplugged from the wall?
In my experience 99% of the time a system just shuts off completely under load (hard shut off right?) then it is either the PSU or overheating.
Check your CPU temps and make sure you are not overheating, check GPU as well although that would not cause the entire system to shut off.. it would just cause the screen to go black. CPU overheating would cause system to shut off.
If CPU temps are fine it's very likely to be PSU related, check your +12v readings in the BIOS as well and make sure they aren't fluctuating. Could be a bad PSU.
It's possible it could be memory or mobo related as well so I would test one stick of RAM at a time.. but in my experience those symptoms are 99% a PSU or overheating problem.

The PC powers off without any input basically when you play a game, about a minute in it'll power off, I was with him during the skyrim intro and a dragon flew up in the sky and the computer just shut off, no power nothing
anyway I'll see what kind of price i can get
i'll basically pay for the hardrive, memory, sound card, cpu case.
all of the other stuff I'll tell him may not be worth anything (to me) because like you guys said either the PSU, GPU or the mobo is messed up
he has an aftermarket fan in there and he overclocked the intel CPU, but i dunno. I don't really give a crap about that stuff, I would never void my warrenty to do stuff like that

Yeah fucking ehh, just posted this so I have a clear understanding if he makes any ultimatums
I don't want to buy a p.c, I'd just build a newer better one if I had the money, but there's no point in me saving up for that right now
but hey I could use it for spare parts so

Probably overheating CPU.. or unstable overclock.. or dying PSU

Sounds about right, overheating CPU I believe will turn off a computer (have never seen it happen, i didn't get into heavy OCing until Sandy Bridge, which has a pretty damned high tjmax) - unstable overclock usually BSOD the computer, but it stays on.... (unless it was causing it to exceed the tjmax, then probably it would shut off -mine would always be well within and just BSOD). Dying PSU can result in all sorts of issues, but seems quite plausible for it to turn off all together... Step 1 is to monitor those temps, look up the thermals on the chip and see when it's supposed to shut off to protect itself..... If too high, reset bios settings to stock if overclocked, check and see if the HSF is clogged with dust, reapply thermal paste etc.
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good. If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

everyone swore mine was the PSU,or possibly overheating, but alas it wasn't.It started out only doing it when i played High powered games, then it just started shutting off even when i wasn't playing a game, not sure if yours is solely game related or not though.

if my understanding is correct, computer parts are generally good for 4 years, after that they start failing, needing more power, or replacing.
Thats why I dont like to buy top end components, because the tech is always evolving.
