Reason for top grains not fully colonizing?

So the last few times I have made jars some of the grains at the top of the jars do not fully colonize. The rest of the jar looks perfect, just the top isn't fully covered in mycelium.
I do a g2g from 1 jar to 7 each time. I let them colonize to 90-95%, and then give them a shake (it has been 12 days since I shook these in the picture). Could it just be the top layer dries out? I have them in the top of my closet with a little fan/heater to keep the closet around 70 degrees in the winter.
Here are the tops of two of the jars, and then the side of one of those jars.

Any idea what could be causing this to happen? Would you use them in a monotub?

I believe the grains on top are drying out.
I use one 3/8" hole covered with a piece of SFD.
what are you using for GE?

Just a 90mm filter disc, with 2 15/64" holes under it. So that comes out to a bit under a 1/2". Do you think that is too much surface area to allow for GE?

we could calculate the area of my one 3/8" hole (using pi r squared) and compare that to the area of your two 15/64" holes ....
I'll bet, if the grain right under your filtered holes is drying out, it is because of the fan blowing in that area.
That's my guess.
if you need the fan with the heater, try covering your jar lids with a towel.

Yea, the area under the filter are the ones that are the least colonized. Thanks for the help.
I plan on still using these jars, they should be good right?

I used to use one 1/4" hole w/ EZ-felt filter for GE on grain jars. Never had a stall.

It's dry. They are colonized, just too dry to fluff up.

I always end up with a few grains on top that dry the fuck out no matter what I do. Look like little raisins, all shriveled up. I usually just flick em off then shake up the jar and spawn it
However those look a little suspect IMO. I'd give em a good sniff before spawning.
