Alternatives to perlite?
    #19341145 - 12/29/13 11:34 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Im aware this has been asked before, but i never really found a concrete answer. I understand nothing will really work as well as perlite because it is a different type of particle but I have 3 cakes that need to be birthed yesterday. I cant and wont be able to get any perlite any time soon. Ive been thinking of setting up some sort of misting contraption but I am a little worried about contamination. I have plenty of storage bins and containers and can be creative, i just need some ideas...

How hard could it be to get perlite? Go to your neighbors or friends who you know have gardens and ask for a favor. Id rather do that than waste 3 perfectly good cakes. Ive seen grows with those hydroponic clay peddle things. Not too sure how they work though.

Why can't you get any perlite? Also no need for an elaborate misting system, best to just keep it simple.

I can not think of any reason a cake has to be birthed right now.
An extra week or even an extra month won't matter and would be even better than bithing after one week consolidation.
So time enough to get some perlite, which should not be hard at all.

What if there were a shit ton of invitro pins and it was ready to be birthed like yesterday?

There's one reason.

Clay pebbles and a air pump and air stone will be a lot harder to find than perlite

Perlite is easy to source.  Garden centers of big box stores usually have it.  you can find it at nurserys and such

If you can find verm  for the cakes you can find perlite

If that would be the case, would the few more days in the jar hurt more, or the inferior fruiting conditions?

you can use a damp towel at the bottom of your sgfc or papaer towels or whatever just take the towel out and wash it every few days or replace the paper towel about every three, anything to get you by till you get nice course perlite, you can do a search rr has alot of ideas out there:thumbup:

Another idea. If you still have verm, get some dung or whatever, pasturize, spawn to bulk. No need for perlite.

I actually like that idea the most, im probably just not that experienced to successfully pull that off without contaminating the whole thing. I actually have a lot of left over verm and i have peat moss around here somewhere too. My cakes are definitely ready to be birthed and I am getting weary about birthing them any longer because they have started pinning. I cant get perlite because the local stores are out of them, and its the middle of the winter so it isnt on their top priority list. Would there really be much of a difference if i just set up a misting terrarium, and misted it and fanned it a few times every few hours?

you want something for the air to pass through and give off humidity

So in that sense then, anything that provides those two qualities would work....

Fold a damp bathtowel in the bottom of the FC to provide humidity.  Just remove it every few days and wash, to make sure it doesn't get moldy.

Once I used verm instead of perlite. I got better results that I expected. 4grams dry from only first flush from 1 cake.
Hope if you try it will work!

You can use Lava rock, clay... anything that is porous.  Why can't you get perlite?  That stuff is everywhere.

Remember. A drop of water is like a lake to a cake. Too much and it will be bad. Misting 2-3 times a day Is just enough. Your going to have to find some sort of porous material. Or even a  wet towel.
