outdoor patch
    #1934112 - 09/20/03 01:55 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I had an 80% colonized contammed 1 pint cake, so I plopped it into a flower pot with some other plants growing on the other side

About 5 days later, of mildly misting the soil everyday(it also rained a bunch, so no need to mist) I spotted about 20 - 30 pins

I gave 'em a few days to grow and today I noticed a bunch of bugs crawling around near/on them

What can I do about these damn bugs? im gonna be mighty angry if they steal the fruits of my labor!

Oh, and how often should I mist the soil, and with how much water? (ex: 3 misting sprays)And should I avoid getting the mushrooms wet?

you can read the faq, it may just have your answers in there. its always a good start to find what you want. good luck, and welcome to the shroomery!

not too wet, the rain very likley hurt your shrooms, and go to your local botanist or plant store about the bugs, they are **generally** quite good at those sorts of things.

The only thing on water I could find in the faq is...

"Live in arizona or Seattle? Work with your forcast. If rain is forcasted ..DUH??? Dont water! If your in the desert.. get ready to be creative and figure out how to get water to your patch. "

And thanks glad, but does anybody have any suggestions before I call up a nursery?

2 cups = 1 pint
2 pint = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon

I've heard insecticide poisons mushrooms, so what do I do if the bugs are crawling around on and immediatly around the mushrooms??

finely chop or crush a bunch of jalapeno or habanero peppers. put them in a cup and fill it with vegetable oil. let them soak for as long as possible, preferably a week. stir and mash them occasionally.
strain the solids out of the oil and the mix to about a liter of water.
you now have a high strength pepper spray. bugs hate it.

don't spray it indoors or in any confined space, don't get it in your eyes or on your skin, and don't breathe in the spray's mist or you'll find out why bugs hate it.

shake the mixture well before each use. i find that it is best to spray a heavy coat real quick, then run like hell.

There are some little white ones that, after searching, can be found on both sides of the flower pot(it's like 2 feet long, mushroom patch taking up like 10 inches on the left), so I'm hoping they're not mushroom loving bugs(unless all bugs love mushrooms...)

And some really small ants

Oh, and I found a catapiller sticking to the side of a mushroom so I removed it... the second one I found in that pot so far, are they a big problem?

And, I'm planning on removing the patch from the pot, putting a bunch of verm on bottom of rubbermaid(to absorb excess moisture) and then putting the patch onto the verm, and surround the inside of rubbermaid with salt. Will this ward off slugs and more insects from intruding? anything else I can do?

if i was doing what you want to do, i would use diatomaceous earth instead of salt.
