Quick desiccant question
    #19333406 - 12/27/13 03:32 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey,
How do you know when your Damp Rid is spent? Can it run out of drying capability? I know it clumps up on me after a good 24-48 fruit drying, but I can always break it up and re use it. Thanks

Yes it does! but good news. you can lay it out on a cookie sheet and bake it at 450 degrees F for a period of time (which i think is like 6 hours but dont quote me on that) to revive it 8)

Sweet Halpophorm. So what yer essentially hypothesizing is that a 5 dollar bucket of damp rid will virtually last forever?...I like the language you speak!

Is this the same for silica gel crystals? I thought damp rid was different.

I'm not sure how exactly it works or what different desiccant a are what but I can only imagine they are all very similar the desiccant that I use personally can be reactivAted through the means posted above which is a silica gel type in large packages used for shipping items that need a dry environment yours may or may not be the same but of it's used and spent up and you try to reactivite it the worst that can happen is you melt it down and still have to buy more either way so I say give it. Shot maybe keep an eye on it or test a small batch before you do your entire collection

Also, desiccant shouldn't be used as a means of drying you should dry your picked mushrooms with a fan or something else that can circulate the air for 24-72 hours before you use the desiccant the desiccant is used to pull the last 10 percent or so amount of water out of the mushrooms to make them cracker dry not to dry them completely

Yeah I always dry with an electric fan for 24-48 hours depending on weight/mass. Then into the desiccant chamber for another 24-48 hours and voila!

DONT PUT YOUR DAMPRID IN THE OVEN. The silica gel kind is the kind you can reuse. Just yesterday I took my clumped used daprid and put it on a cookie sheet and into the oven. I remembered reading that doing so would allow you to reuse it. So I put it into the oven at like 200 degrees. After putting it in the oven I jumped on the shroomery to make sure I was remembering right and the first post I read was someone asking what they did wrong because they tried to do this and there damp rid melted into a slurry of syrup. After reading that I jumped off the couch to find that about half of the damp rid I had put on the cookie sheet had melted.

Just buy a dehydrator. I usually just buy another one at WalMart and return the old one  when it burns out and get my money back. Gets the job done quick and easy
