Silva absolutely DESTROYED his shin. Snapped it clean in half.
I don't ever watch UFC, in fact it was the first fight I've ever seen, and it was a crazy way for it to end.

I think it's very likely. He's pretty old at 38 to come back from something like that. That was a catastrophic injury.

not really, it's a broken shit, not that big of a deal, 2 monts in a cast, a little rehab, several months of training and he could be right back in the ring. it's not a shitload of damage to a joint or anything.

38 years old after two consecutive losses to the same guy, tko and a broken leg. Guarantee he doesn't return...Anyway psychologically his head will not be in the octagon.
That was one of the most epic cards in history, excepting this ending. Rousey vs Tate was fckin unbelievable! I've never seen judo used so well over and over in an mma fight...Not since parisyan anyway but he turned into a painkiller addict

When a leg breaks like that, it isnt just about getting the bone to heal, it is the muscles and tendons get stretched and torn from the ends of broken bone and they become scarred and you then have scar tissue inside your leg muscles. Also for a break like this he will need pins to hold bones in place, further complicating recovery.
By the time he is able to start fully training it will be months, possibly a year. Even then a leg never really fully heals from an injury like that, especially at his age. If he were to return to competing, that leg would be the first thing any opponent will target.
And that isnt even mentioning that he wouldnt be able to use it for leg kicks.

Wow. I just saw the fight right now after reading this thread. That shin break is one of the craziest injuries I've seen in the UFC, although to be fair, I've only seen maybe a dozen fights in my life. Here's the shin break on loop. Enjoy:

Indeed, 3 to 6 months recovery time has been reported.
Quote:
Following Saturday evening’s UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC’s Orthopedic Surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia.
The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months.
Now, whether hew will return to UFC is another question.
He has been wanting to fight Roy Jones Jr., and just recently wanted to try out for the taekwondo Olympics team but Dana White has not been allowing that.

I feel bad for the guy. In fight #1 he was goofing around too much but either way if you would have told me that both fights ended the way that they did there's no way I'd believe it. That break was BRUTAL. I think his career is over to be honest with you. By the time he fully recovers from that he'll be 40

Some people think that Weidman purposefully attempted that knowing Silva's use of those kicks. It does look clear his leg broke because of where it connected with Weidman's knee which he raised.
I don't really know much about the sport, and am not convinced this is the case, but does anyone have anything they could add? Is it within the realm of UFC that someone would do this on purpose?

That is true, but the question is whether he purposefully tried to break his leg by doing that. Watching the full scenario, and it looks somewhat deliberate.

I think its still enough of a niche sport that it'll survive. Oddly enough, I think the women's division is hitting a small, previously untapped segment.

Weidman practiced checking kicks A LOT before the silva fight, he knew they would be coming. When you check a kick like that, there is a lot of assumption that if hit just right the other guys leg is gonna break. So really, he did it on purpose but probably had no idea to what extent any injury would come from it.

Well even if he did it on purpose he was in the octagon with Anderson Fucking Silva! IMO the best MMA fighter of all time. If your not goin in there to break your going to get broke. Silva was like a force of nature, you don't go into a tornado with a fucking umbrella and expect to come out dry. Let's get real here.

Why wouldn't they? It's not against the rules. Anything that is within the rules goes. He specifically stated in the post-fight interview that he worked on checking leg kicks. He didn't know the guy's leg was going to break but he certainly intended to hurt him.
It's a fight with 30 000 cheering you on. Of course it's "within the realm of UFC" that he would do it on purpose if it's legal.

I mean whats the alternative? He could've been in the same boat as Chuck Liddel there at the end. Just lickin the mustard jar and getting his ass kicked until he retired. IMHO I think its a blessing in disguise. At least now he'll be able to end his career as a legend instead of the old vet that needs to be forced into retirement. Its better to burn out then fade away.

For all of you guys asking if weidman did that on purpose..
Yes he raised his leg to block that kick on purpose. Its an extremely common technique that comes from Muay Thai, usually somebody blocks with the shin (hurts like fuck but the kicker moreso). Now he couldn't possibly have checked that kick knowing he would break silva's leg but its not impossible that his coaches taught him to block with his knee to hurt silva but I dont think anybody expected his leg to break

Yeah, Silva should have ate his wheaties

to anyone saying he's coming back, why would he? this rematch was so hyped up then he jumped in the ring and completely humiliated himself, honestly he had no business fighting weidman again, it was clear he was gonna lose within the first round, just not that he'd snap his own leg in half.

Nope, totally wrong. Historically silva has started slow in most fights. He always sizes up his opponents movement, range and patterns. He is a counter striker and uses the 1st to analyse his opponent. I think most ufc fans who know what they're talking about would say this, and if you compare the 2nd round to the 1st you will see a definite difference.

i don't understand how someone could try to brake a bone of a foe by blocking a strike. the lack of logical thinking is mind bending. but that aside: these are prize fights, the goal is to win; so in a larger more general 'did he really try to hurt that guy?' vain of what you're asking: yes, he wanted to win the fight, buy causing harm to his foe while taking as little damage to himself as possible.

that may be so but he came SO SO SO close to being knocked out in the first round, the fight was incredibly close to being called before he managed to get back up.
Silva wasn't going to win regardless of the leg break.
