Do you DJ? Produce music?
    #19339654 - 12/29/13 12:04 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I'm looking for advice on a good mixing board for beginners, 2 channels and with turn tables. ($300 max, preferably less)

Also wondering where a good place to start with producing electic music, like dubstep, or anything future, would be?

All advice, and tips VERY appreciated!

Thank you! Is the program fairly simple to get the hang of?

For producing stuff, just get a DAW and start learning it.  I started out using FL but upgraded to Ableton a good while ago and love it so much.  I just got myself a nice midi controller too which makes it 100% more fun for me as I have always been more of a "acoustic instrument" type person i.e. playing live instruments like drums, guitar, piano as opposed to a computer programmer.  A midi controller makes it MUCH more hands on and like handling an instrument as opposed to sitting behind a computer trying to hack into a government mainframe or some shit.

This all assumes you play music to some degree.  If you don't, start there.  Get a keyboard or something and start learning some fundamentals and getting musical ideas/knowledge.

You are opening up a gigantic rabbit hole.  There is so much to learn in terms of audio engineering, producing, mixing, sound design...  Is it easy to get the hang of? Well, I mean, you'll be able to figure out where shit goes and how to make sounds.  Is it easy to get it sounding polished and pretty and professional?  Absolutely not.  There's tons to learn and practice.  But that's what makes it so fun.

I would actually recommend starting with Ableton Live.  It's so intuitive.  I personally think it is "better" than FL, at least for me.  Maybe my game has just improved that much since I last used FL (no doubt that it has) but I just like Ableton so much more.  It also comes with a really good hands on walkthrough tutorial that gets you up and running quickly, explaining a good amount about getting started.

Here's the link for the demo:  https://www.ableton.com/en/trial/

I would suggest not to worry about genre. Just make something up and put it down. FL Studio is a great choice, as is Ableton Live... you don't necessarily need physical equipment to produce quality music. That's probably something you would want to look into if you end up performing, though.

Stick with it! It's a long learning process, like playing an instrument, but satisfying every step of the way.

Ableton will give you more in the longrun.

FL studio works fine but if you're just starting out might as well go with Ableton. Ableton is a much more versatile tool and will end up teaching you more about production than FL will IMO.

Good luck! Just make sure to give up your social life for a few years and you'll be set.
