I haven't searched Alii (means king or royalty in Hawaiian) seems oyster like, but Pioppini only comes up once when searched. Since I have some fresh, locally grown fungus in the fridge (most will go into turkey stuffing tomorrow, and at least one of them has not been discussed in here, I thought I would ask y'all's help in growing them from the remnants of my score.
And... GO!

Pioppino is how it's spelled. Aka black poplar mushroom.
I'm guessing the other one is king oyster or p. eryngii

I don't think you can grow Pioppino outdoors in Hawaii, IIRC they need cool weather to induce fruiting

I've fruited black poplar outdoors in 70-80degree weather. Mid 60's is more ideal. If you can make sawdust blocks, you could fruit them outside. Kings however, like much cooler temps, around 50-60. It's worth a try though, and if you want more heat tolerant species, look for pink or phoenix oyster.

You freakin' lucky people that live in hawaii...
Yeah that looks like a king, like already mentioned those things will have a lot of trouble pinning unless you can get 'em into the lower 60's or so. Not sure what the weather is like there actually, all I know is IT'S NOT FREAKING 10 DEGREES!
Kiddin', maybe a fridge cold shock and pop 'em outside?
WJ - yeah oysters are a lot more forgiving when it comes to pinning, kings really really need some coolness!

what???!!! they suck, they are a factory.. sorry sir but you are too WRONG..
its a company that got bought by a Japanese bottle cultivation company. its a joke in my opinon. I am taking them down and showing how to really run a farm.. with employees!!!
Bob and Janice have had their hands in a variety of careers and substrate on the road to becoming successful mushroom farmers in Hamakua.
Overcoming obstacles that would have stopped many, they persevered to create Hamakua Mushrooms, which are now found in supermarkets and stores around the state, on the tables of the most discerning Hawaiian restaurants, and even at a White House dinner.
Janice Stanga spent 27 years as an interior designer and her husband, Bob, was a helicopter pilot on Oahu before they decided to switch careers and start growing mushrooms. Why mushrooms? Because they wanted to create gourmet items no one else was growing. By 2003, they had built a 16,000-square-foot facility that today produces nearly 4,000 pounds of mushrooms a week, employing 20 people from the Laupahoehoe area.
Bob and Janice Stanga have literally created a gourmet fungal jungle!
that is bs I have a friend who grows shiitake outdoors at high elevation on big I and he used to work for them.. they didn't even make spawn till he told them..
they didn't make money and got bought by gourmetmushroooms.co
IT IS A BIG SUPPORT LOCAL SCAM.
sorry hits a nerve ALOHA

No nerves hit... except one. When you said I was wrong, you called me, "Sir".
Just got a lb of locally grown gourmet fungus for less than buttons or bellas from the mainland. That may be a scam to you but it is a bargain to me. We can both be right.

sorry I just said that in my head as I was forming the thought.. SIR sorry just wanted to make it official.. they grow on eucalyptus too.. a bragin is a big price to pay for everyone else on that island.. they flood the market here too.. 4 tons a week its crazy and they only employ 20 human beings?
no sorry hamakua is wrong
I thought people on here would be more aware of this crap, if we keep it up and make mushrooms more popular a lot of bottle factories will pop up and every grower will go under.. STOP HAMAKUA! BUY LOCAL!
BUY CERVANTESE HAMAKUA CLONE AT YOUR LOCAL MARKET SOON!

Black poplar mushrooms are impressive on agar and millet - run through birdseed spawn like wild fire.
