What is the value of life...

After institutions? Consider this situation:
A 17 year old is on probation. To avoid getting detained in a youth facility, he is allowed to live at home, but court stipulations are that if the parents even suspect drug or alcohol use, they must take the boy to the hospital to be tested.
The boy is on probation and is doing well. As a result, he gets bumped back from weekly to monthly testing. To celebrate this change in situation, he goes out with his friends. He uses alcohol. Maybe he uses other stuff. We never find out.
When he arrives home that night, his father is sitting up in the living room waiting for him. Asks him where he has been. Boy tells him he has been out with friends. Father says, "You know, we have to go to the hospital now." Fight ensues. Of course father has his way.
On the drive to the hospital the stop at a stoplight on a freeway of some sort. Kid unbuckles his belt and says, goodbye. He unlocks the passenger door, strolls to the edge of the freeway overpass, and jumps off.

Not me. Kid died. But even if this wasn't a personal case, and was just a philosophical word problem, what was the kid did right? Was it a good choice?

As a metaphor to as how grueling jail, probation, and drug testing can be. It's an interesting way to look at it.
To kill yourself over it literally is a joke (not a funny one) to me.

Life is always better than death.
Obviously many think differently. But that's my opinion. I'd rather be living a shitty life than no life at all.
Eh I can think of a few exceptions. Being tortured would suck. Constantly. Every day.

Going through jail, probation, ua's, and the such, I think he made the right choice.
We can't say such bland things are life is always the best choice because that assumes that life is inherently valuable. Is life valuable for the vegetable? is it valuable for the ptsd veteran who can't function? It becomes a forecasting choice. Is something going to come along later in life and make all this worth it/heal the person, or will their scarring situation overcome any ability to self-heal, condemning them to an eternity of suffering within the skin.

How can you possibly compare this situation to a veteran with PTSD and then say he made the right choice. How on Earth was that kid comparable to a vegetable. All he had to do was man up and not use drugs for a bit.

A person shouldn't have to live in fear, simply because they want to do some drugs. In my honest opinion, the law drove him to kill himself. What else was he going to do, go to jail? what kid fucking needs that in there life?

Yeah, I agree. The laws are fucked up, trust me I've experienced the wonders of the US justice system firsthand. But sometimes you just have to play ball and jump through the hoops to avoid getting fucked, especially when you live with extremely straight parents.
