Purpose of Humanity? The Universe Experiencing Itself
    #19336599 - 12/28/13 11:18 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

The Titanic Struggle of the Self

The experience of being is the universe experiencing itself. We exist for the purpose of this experience. The universe has brought us into existence in order to experience itself.

There is only one self, and we are tasked with the continuation of its necessary struggle. Our individual struggles are merely the tip of a tragic empire. Life itself in all-forms has suffered for the higher purpose of the universe experiencing itself. Leading up to homo sapiens sapiens, throughout its biological evolution, life has developed ever richer sensory instruments. Our exquisitely sensitive form of consciousness has illuminated existence, it is 'the light', it is the torch which we must carry.

Our only purpose so far as I can see, is to allow the universe to experience itself through us. As we are part of the universe, this can be simplified as: our purpose is to experience.

if you need to put purpose into your mythology that might seem to help with the overall mystery of life that may be nagging at you to say something beautiful; but I don't think there is purpose per se, while there are relationships between beings and nature about which you can say many beautiful things without claiming any motive or intent in the cosmos.

Respectfully disagree.  I believe this view is no different than that of religion where we believe we are here for a purpose.  The Universe is energy and as Einstein pointed out “Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.”  Therefore, it can only be assumed that through the 11 billion years the Universe has existed, energy has randomly formed into many things including humans.  We are here because we are here....no higher purpose.

I just snagged a good vibe there for awhile.  Sort of like "Ohh yeah thats right, the cosmic ghost in the universe per se".

No, that sounds like your bag.  Maybe you should post something on it as it's news to me.

I think demanding a purpose for life is flawed/foolish.

However, anytime somebody has asked me that question or it has come up I just reply the purpose of life(by which I mean human life) is to live and experience life.

The universe doesn't appear to have any specific purpose, but I would point out that that doesn't mean it can't amount to something.

I think we are fooled into cynical attitudes about what could be because the state of our planet right now is, let's face it, rather primitive.  Truth is, anything is possible in the universe.  If our species can survive for another thirty years or so, and get itself out of the doldrums, I think there is great potential for us to have something worthwhile.

To get back to the original question, ultimately, no, there is no higher purpose other than that which we might create for ourselves.

But that doesn't mean that conscious beings can't eventually do quite well in the universe.

I like this response... Words do very little justice to what is going on here.

Humans are really just another force of nature (and by extension the universe). Some people say, ohh we're destroying the planet with global warming. Well, not really, that's just the next phase of the planet. Even our technology is not separate from nature. It just takes on more and more complex forms but it's still through the laws of nature.

What are phases, how do you define when they start and end?

What does this have to do with our ability to address problems such as pollution, over fishing, soil erosion, etc.? Do these things not happen at actual locations due to specific causes? Or are they all due to some "phase"; is there nothing that cone be done?
