looks like a modified sterol backbone but so far, i'm hittin a google wall...
Hint: This chemical has antibiotic effects.
Also, and maybe more importantly, it's found in other fungi: Penicillium funiculosum and at least one other species. (N17B)

this one is Wortmannin which i found interesting to learn about too... its used as a reagent in DNA analysis? in vivo analysis???
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wortmannin
anyway, pretty cool. the hints gave it away.
here's one:

hint: this metabolite is formed by the anamorph of a fungus we see a fair amount of pictures of in the hunting forum, sprouting out of... stuff

sure! IMO this one has some amazing economic implications.

edit: i read a bit closer and found i mis-spoke, the telemorph has only been collected in eastern asia - but we have the anamorph here from what i understand, and others of the same genus fruiting in pictures.

ya, if 'grasshoppers' are locusts (they are, aren't they?) - least thats how the pic is labeled.
you're on the trail Cordyceps is the telemorph

sure, it may give the hints you need to keep it interesting. there are 'strains' shown to be host-specific or at least prefered (my understanding) and corn treated with spores of this fungus showed a marked reduction in a pest w/o application of chemical insecticides (as i remember it).
sorry about all the disclaimers, its not like i actually study this shit, so its from reading unknowable sources.
there are also investigations into other species of insects... many pests to humans i think, but not sure if its actually in the marketplace yet or passed whatever regs need to be passed.
oh, and i think its been shown 100% effective against bedbugs. edit edit ah, and i found some you can buy, so it is out there. hmm useful for indoor thrip control. nice. can't think of any burgeoning indoor growing industries that might need organic pest control though.

try this:

The fungus is Beauvaria bassiana, anamorph of Cordyceps bassianus, and the chemical is tenellin. Tenellin was originally suspected to play a role in the fungus's ability to invade insects, but that now seems to not be the case [source]. You can actually buy jugs of liquid culture of certain strains of B. bassiana for use as insecticide.
Someone else can post a chemical

indeed it is. i thought the fungus is cool, i just felt this metabolite had been associated fairly well with it in the literature. i don't have one handy either.
while googling, i did run across a guy's blog where he was 'using it off-label' and spraying botanigard around his house, apparently having been dealing with a severe infestation of bedbugs. i was sorta amazed at all the people jumping his shit for doing that, to the extent that one guy was threatening to call the FBI n shit. on a blog. does make you wonder why pple are so fucking crazy.
i just did a fast scan to get to the guy's 'results' and he claimed to have rid himself in a few weeks, when no amount of chemical pesticides did, w/o the side effects of said agents.
true? hard to say, but if i had bedbugs, i'd be sprayin' that shit everywhere to find out too.

dude, jump in anytime! if you're reading about a cool fungus and happen to note that it has a metabolite of interest for some reason however narrow, that has been identified, post away! thats all i'm doin, yanno.
when i read something i find interesting, i do a few minutes of research and then if its actually findable i'll post it and hope someone else thinks tis too.
we're all learning together. just like recognizing shrooms, its all about practice and active engagement. bring anything you like. luckily you won't have to scroll far for the list of stuff already posted lol

Okay. Here's a new one:
Try to name both the chemical and the species of fungus growing on malt extract agar.

This chemical may have antiviral potential. It seems to be very reactive in a number of different ways.
Hint: This chemical was studied as an antibiotic and antifungal in the 40s - and recently as an antiviral agent.
If this guess turned out really easy for you, please add a tip about this chemical's structure.

Fun thread, but am new to it. So is allowed to use google and other tools?
Since I think I might found name to both, but needed some help from google and Chemsketch.
