My question is, what do you think about doing a monotub or similar technique instead of the pf tek for a first time grower?
I mean, if you're getting more for about the same price, amount of work, and risk of contamination, why wouldn't you?
Well, what do you think about what I think, and if you agree, are there any specific techniques/guides that you would recommend to me?
If you have a PC and willing to follow instruction and sterile procedures 100% go for it. If you don't have a PC get a halfway quality one that holds quart jars new or used .

Its on my list of places. I am under contract for the next 4 years for work, so I cannot leave for the time being. Alaska and/or Australia are my top choices. Anything could happen once I get done with this stint.

You've noticed that the normal progression of newbs in this hobby is to go from PF cakes in a SGFC to monotubs, but that's only half the story: after growers master the monotub they often start to get bored and start playing with exotics or edibles back in the SGFC they started in. And while I'm not keen on V-tek for a handful of reasons, I'll readily admit that it's a lot of fun to play with.
Buy a PC, and use it even if you do cakes. Then play with cakes, tubs, pp5s and agar all at the same time. If you think you're interested now, it's only going to get worse.
Glad to have you make the swap over to cult, btw. Welcome!

Meh, I started off with a PC and did PF Tek. I got impatient while they were colonizing though and started a monotub at the same time. Tried a whole bunch of different shit starting off, it was alot of fun and PF tek definitely shows the lifecycle of the mushroom well. (and they look great fruiting) I'm all bulk now, but want to get some PFs going just cause they are fun.
I did the same thing. while i was doing my first PF cakes I got some pre-sterilized rye bags and tried bulk in bag then jumped into a martha...
