Light it, turn the lights off.. stare through it.. relax..breath deep and rhythmic..focus on the breathing, and the flame.

focus on whatever it is your doing. dont focus on focusing. dont strain, because that is a sign of focusing on focusing. if you do feel like you arent perfectly focused, then gently push your mind back towards the original object of attention (preferably your breathing for starters). in general, try to do things completely, focusing only on them, without thinking or letting your mind wander. when you eat, feel the food as its in your mouth, and your mouth as it chews. that kinda thing.

I meditate in two ways. The first one is to close my eyes, clear my mind and to "step through" the darkness I see. The other, as mentioned, is to focus on what you're doing and nothing but that.

Since child hood I would always throw myself into a meditative state by visualizing (hypothetically) that nothing exists, just whiteness. No earth, no people, no universe. Just whiteness that was beyond space and time (I never knew why I always pictured whiteness instead of blackness). To this day, it's the only meditative tactic that seems to works the best.

I do my best to develop single-pointed concentration on one pattern or repeating phenomenon, such as my breath. Centering our minds in this way allows the incessant chatter of our minds to gradually fall away. Then, there is this refreshing silence.

At school, there was a very loud ventilation system that would pollute a quiet test room with noise. In the winter, when the forced-air heating system had brought the temperature back to an adeqate range, it would stop suddenly. There would be this sudden hyper-awareness of the silence, of stillness. That's what I'm trying to describe.
