LA to push new drug test for New Year's crackdown

LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles drivers pulled over on New Year's Eve may get on-the-spot tests for more than just too much champagne.

In this year's annual driving-under-the-influence crackdown, LA City Attorney Mike Feuer (FYOO'-uhr) is pushing for expanded use of a new oral swab test that checks for marijuana, cocaine and other drugs.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1cbRdRr) reports Friday that the test is already in circulation but has been used just 50 times in the city this year, and has yet to be presented as evidence.

Feuer says the city has traditionally focused on—and made far more arrests for—drunken driving, but he's looking to aggressively enforce all impaired-driving laws.

The optional drug test provides quicker screening than the blood tests that are required for DUI arrests.

The oral swabs are hardly effective for marijuana. For cocaine they work pretty well.

If you need a test to check that a driver was on drugs, then he obviously wasn't impaired...

Just another step towards a stricter police state. I stay out of LA anyway.

why dont they just go ahead and build that fence on the mexican border, then continue it all the way around our country. That's probably the easiest way to imprison every person in the US.

...a bit of a generalization, but i agree.
"Marijuana should remain illegal because it's so hard to test for concerning impaired driving..."
"Right there, in the second part of that sentence...why would it be so hard to tell if a person is impaired-driving while HIGH compared to DRUNK?...because one is NOT AS IMPAIRED WHILE HIGH"

...in terms of motor skills AND inhibitions.

I don’t know about you guys but i can drive pretty well over the legal limit for alcohol. .08% is not a lot of alcohol at all. I don’t think your driving is seriously impaired until at least double that.

There is a level for impaired driving. I normally have no problems driving high, but there are times where you are so high you shouldn’t drive. Just like with alcohol

The best way is just to avoid driving at all costs when you’ve been drinking or smoking regardless of how good you can drive, not worth the risk.

I tend to go with a zero tolerance policy for myself just to be safe...

Although on weed sweet fuck all im driving, lol. i might delay like 15 minutes at most, but I'm going. I had actually just smoked a bowl in my car before getting pulled over... Like not even 10 minutes later.

Long story short, after all the sobriety tests (walk the line, follow the light [god were my eyes blazed], and stand on one foot and count 'one-one thousand' and up) there was not sufficient evidence to book me.

plus I'm white. Whew!

Lol thats always interesting.

Ya im not too worried about myself driving high, but i have known some people that i would not like to see drive baked. Its different for everybody and i honestly think they do need a method to check for it, if and when weed becomes legalized.

Staying off the roads on New Year's Eve is just a good idea in general. Fuck being on the roads with a bunch of intoxicated, moronic drivers (alcohol and/or other substances) even if you are driving sober or riding with a sober driver. If you're trying to get silly, find a good location and stick with it.

Is it me or is the pronunciation of his name close to Führer.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1cbRdRr) reports Friday that the test is already in circulation but has been used just 50 times in the city this year, and has yet to be presented as evidence.
What a waste, well good for the ones who were caught.  Were you checking the submissiveness of the populace?

The optional drug test provides quicker screening than the blood tests that are required for DUI arrests.'
Quicker screening also translates to you will get a higher fine or more jail time due to the there being more drugs in your body.

They should set up that check point at the 101 freeway Hollywood Blvd. entrance lol. Thousands would get busted.

It would be funny to see the cops try to enforce that in Watts. They'd get a fat anal swab from Big Tyrone :drysmash:
