Do you think animals are conscious beings?

Personally, yes. And my reasoning is very simple. Some animals, usually domesticated (cats, dogs, etc.), clearly show distinct personalities. I challenge anyone to meet my dog and claim otherwise.
In order to have personality, one must have conscious thought. Perhaps only domesticated animals have personalities, and are therefore conscious. It could be the result of living with humans for generations, and adapting to that environment. Even without evolutionary theory this is plausible, as a fairly recent study proved that memories (mostly intense memories like fear), can be passed genetically from parent to offspring.
Discuss.

Some mammals, maybe. I think it's a little far fetched, though.

I'd actually be disturbed to meet someone who doesn't think this, especially domestic animals.

What if its a person that doesn't like, or own animals? It'd be understandable for them to not believe it because they're biased, and don't get much firsthand experience. My family are mostly bible thumpers. They're not allowed to believe animals are conscious beings because that would mean they have an eternal soul, and are on the same level as humans. Luckily for me, I'm not a Christian, so I'm allowed to believe what I see with my eyes.

Tell your family to test there religion by having a pet dog/cat.
Watch them question their religion.
I love domestic animals, they are all unique with their on personality, guarantee any person with animals will say the same thing.

Of course they are, even a fly. No animal could function if it wasnt a point of consciousness hooked up to senses feeding it data about the environment.
Where does that eyesight, sense of hearing, smell and touch go to, but to a point of consciousness to make executive decisions?
Its only natural.
Cats, dogs, rabbits, dream. That would make no sense without it being a conscious being.
Granted, flies arent the brightest bulb in the christmas tree, look at how they get trapped by windows, its retarded. But try to swat one and witness lightning quick split second sensory-cognitive-motoric decisionmaking at work.
Are they conscious beings? Is like asking, does this computer have an operating system? It functions, so yes. Unless you are a creationist instinct still requires a learning process to have become ingrained.

Its just a justification for animal abuse. "aww they dont feel it" No, thats why they're shrieking and frantically thrashing about in anguish.

SPX: some of them have, or have had pets. They're very devout. If the authors of that book say god told them something, that's the way it is. It doesn't matter what you witness to the contrary. That's just Satan testing you.
Wiccan: That was beautifully explained. But I think its definitely more perceivable in domesticated animals. Maybe even more present, simply because they don't have to fend for themselves. They live on more than just survival instinct.

I don't believe that, but ask any "good Christian." Animals have no souls.

What would they be if they weren't conscious? Wild animals just think differently than us. Horses have been trained to paint mountain landscapes that they see with their eyes. I'd say that takes some degree of consciousness.
