Why isn't religion classified as a mental illness? 3

Somehow because I have violent mood swings I'm "mentally ill" but the person that fears everyday for the wellbeing of their soul after death, because an invisible entity is going to condemn them to an eternity of pain is normal. Seriously, our understanding of mental illness is such bullshit, I really can't figure it out on my own. It seems to me that everyone is fucking crazy in some way or another, but everyone has different ways to cope with it. Maybe I'm an asshole, but I think the "crazy" person that lives everyday on his own terms is less fucked in the head than the religious person that acts according to his fear of the afterlife. People say mental illness isn't stigmatized, but everyone knows damn well if religion was listed in DSM-VI they would lose all credibility pisses me off even more. Psychiatry is fucking bullshit, and anyone who has been through the system sees how fucking useless it is. End rant.

it would be an interesting experiment, to tell a shrink a story that fills out all those points but different and see what happens
eg, i fear my soul is going to be stolen by aliens because im not living a virtuous life, and they have technology to see everything
but more thought out so its seems plausible and not sounding like a religion

it needs a lot of work, but its not rocket science
skitzo- delusions/hallucinations
bi-polor- mood swings
depression- sad
personality disorder - whole range of shit
IMO its not our understanding of the illness(or at least the symptoms if not the actual whats different in the brain)
but understanding of how to treat it, that needs work

I think your definition of religion could benefit from some qualification. Fearing for your soul after death isn't something only religious folks do, nor is it something every religious person does.
That being said, yes, psychiatry does jump to labeling people. Why that is the case, I don't know. Perhaps it is a failure of the system, or perhaps it is working exactly as some pharmaceutical company has intended. Regardless...religion certainly can't be--at least not on it's own, what's upset you enough to post this.

Its an observation of basic human traits combined with really basic neuropharmacology to back it up. Its junk science paired with a basic understanding of how the brain works, but the understanding of the mind is so minimal. Its like making religion into a science really.

Why isn't having a mental illnesses not a religion. ?
-------------------- I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Our pursuit into our understanding of the human mind will always be limited by the current state of our collective cognitive ability.

At some point in time our (physical) medical industry was the same, I am sure a lot of early patients would have rather died from their injuries than endure the healing process of a doctor doing the worlds first amputation.

Prove what? That I am God? Or that you are too?
You'll just have to take my word for it.
