Self-Healing schizophrenia and other chronic illness through psychedelics
    #19334195 - 12/27/13 07:33 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hi there, new poster long time lurker finally coming out to share this experience and see if others have any input.

First some background for context: I am clinically diagnosed with undifferentiated schizophrenia (7 years ago now), depression, fibromyalgia, systemic lupus, and a cancer survivor. I get paranoid, have had episodes of auditory and visual hallucination, delusions, and most of the negative symptoms associated with schizophrenia as well. I am not able to function on my own most days due to my physical and mental conditions. From lupus and fibromyalgia the main thing that troubles me is chronic pain and fatigue.

After years of seeing countless doctors prescribing what seems like every pharmaceutical under the sun  and spending way too much time in therapy I finally gave up playing by their rules and turned to self medicating myself. Starting with cannabis to help control chronic pain, insomnia, lack of appetite, and all of the other wonderful medicinal benefits I started researching the connection between psychedelics and therapeutic uses. I slowly weaned off 7 prescriptions after I took up smoking regularly. I'd never condone anyone else do this without extensive research prior and doctor supervision, use your own judgement here but it worked for me. Sadly I do not live in a state where medical cannabis is legal though.

My first experience was with 2g of dried psilocybin cubensis about 2 hours after dinner. I had a very strange reaction, there were no visuals at all. I have a historically high tolerance for substances since I've been on so many meds over the years. For the first hour I was a little nauseous, then suddenly my brain and body disconnected from one another. Ataxia set in. I was having trouble moving around, almost felt drunk. Half an hour later I was a giant human noodle no longer able to use my limbs so I just laid there and let it pass a few hours later. My mind was racing a little, similar to what a good Sativa high does but nothing more. I don't know what caused this since my BF who is much more experienced with tripping had a blast and none of the weird side effects I did. He took 3g.

2 months later and a lot more research done, I read that benzodiazepines can inhibit the effects of mushrooms. At the time of my last experience I was taking my prescribed Alprazolam at a decently high dose, 4-6mg a day. Has anyone else noticed interference with benzos and mushrooms or any other pharmaceuticals?

My second experience was far better. My doctor switched me from Alprazolam (Xanax) to Diazepam (Valium). That time I went with 4g of the same mushrooms after fasting 8 hours, skipping my daily benzos, and played my didgeridoo 45 min straight while waiting for them to take effect. My bf was in the other room watching TV waiting for them to hit. I think by taking in more oxygen and getting blood circulating faster from playing my didgeridoo helped them hit a little faster, I didn't really intend to stop playing so much as I found that I couldn't do it anymore and hearing the TV from the other room made me panic. Things got very scary for a moment but in the back of my mind I knew what was happening to me. I've read most of Ram Dass, Tim Leary, and Terence McKenna's work and understood how the drug was reacting to my brain. It was almost as though I was hearing voices like in a bad episode but they told me "It's okay, this is just ego death you'll be fine soon. It's a part of the process and doesn't last very long." etc.

The visuals started taking over. Even closing my eyes I saw spinning geometric patterns everywhere. I felt nauseous and had no sense of who or where I was. My bf had brought me my pipe to take a few hits off of to help the nausea, somehow I managed the coordination to do it and after that I plunged headfirst in to wonderland. The things going on inside my mind were much different from what was happening to my body. Again I had the problems of being unable to control what my body was doing. I was laying on the floor going between laughing and crying and had a very hard time speaking clearly while my mind was running cicles. Word salad came out until I screamed at my bf to go away, later he told me the exact words were "Just go away, I'll come back when I'm dead!" which rightfully scared him a good bit. In my mind I knew that "I" meant ego, I just couldn't effectively communicate that to him. It was much funnier later when I could explain what was going on. Once I steadied myself and adjusted the next 3 hours were the best I've ever spent but we all know how that can go

The most interesting thing I noticed was the aftermath. Not only have I felt more at peace I've noticed a drastic reduction in chronic pain. Most days I wake up feeling at a 5 or 6, a good day is a 3 and a bad day 7+. My pain scale didn't go above 4 and I had so much more energy than usual for two weeks after that trip. I'm not nearly as depressed or anxious and my paranoia is greatly reduced as well. Prior I was having 6-8 bad psychotic episodes a month regardless of being medicated or not. All the medication ever seemed to do for me was cause side effects that made it impossible to function normally. Since that trip 2 months ago I haven't had a single bad episode and am off most of the medication I used to take. Most importantly, I feel better overall. So much better. I'm really looking forward to my next trip on a stronger level and seeing what LSD has to offer as well, I have a few tabs and 28g stashed away to experiment over the course of the next year.

I don't think anyone here will be able to give you a prophetic, definitive answer as to whether using psychedelics, even in a responsible way, would be be beneficial or detrimental to your condition.

That said, I'm quoting Dr. Stanislav Grof here from his book LSD Doorway To the Numinous: "The last example is a description of an advanced LSD session of Michael, a nineteen-year-old schizophrenic student who was the youngest person we treated with psycholytic therapy...The following outline is his thirty-second session...The session started with a feeling of "pure tension" that was building up to higher and higher levels. When the tension was transcended, Michael had an experience of overwhelming cosmic ecstasy...After this session, his psychotic symptoms never reappeared." (Emphasis mine)

So according to a prominent LSD researcher, under careful clinical guidance, there may be hope of resolving schizophrenia over a long series of guided sessions. Going at it alone is a whole other ball game. Be careful, good luck.

Mushrooms are great healers, though the process can be a bit arduous.  Still, ya get what ya pay for, so keep going as long as the results are encouraging.

:peace:PS

PS BTW the difference between the first and second trip re. visuals - visuals are highly dose dependent.  2g dried is pretty low.

Thank you, I'll have to pick up that book and give it a read. You can never have too many books unless you run out of space to put them.

I'm slowly figuring out dosage vs. potency and whatnot. I think 2g wasn't really enough and 4g was a bit much. Next time I'll go in the middle and try 3g.

Oh, I found an article based on research for using psilocybin and LSD to treat schizophrenia.

http://www.hofmann.org/papers/fisher/fisher_4.htm

"Timmy's first four sessions were almost exclusively devoted to biting, chewing and aggressive oral behavior...His physical attacking behavior subsided and he became interested in relating to other boys his age as well as the treatment staff. He wanted physical contact, became playful and enjoyed himself. His parents began taking him home for weekends due to these behavioral changes and they repeatedly told us that they were amazed at his improvement." Timmy had autism not schizophrenia, but it sounds like he had appreciable improvements from treatment.

The blinding font is killing me. I just skimmed it over, but I'll take a better look at it

Acidreamer, I have read that study before which is what got me to take the plunge. Dr. Fisher has quite a few papers on the subject. Here's a link with a less blinding font http://www.maps.org/news-letters/v07n3/07318fis.html

Oh sweet, thanks for the link.

I'm guessing a lot of people would poopoo on your idea to take on this kind of self-administered therapy. There just isn't enough research at this point. You're gonna do what you think is best anyway, so I just hope it works out for you. Consider posting a log here to contribute to anecdotal evidence!

Absolutely agreed, I certainly would never condone anyone doing extensive self medicating on this level. It can be very dangerous so arming myself with as much knowledge as possible and treading lightly is the game plan.

I'm doing this partially out of desperation because modern medicine has failed me too many times and partially because now that I stuck my head in the rabbit hole and liked it, I want to go back. It's fun, simply put. Medicinal and spiritual things aside. I'm not looking for Metatron to swoop down out of the vortex and take me to the land of the heavens to cure me, I just want to have a few more days of walking without a cane and being able to leave the house without irrational fears of being followed. At 23 years old that isn't too much to ask.

I always record experiences and will definitely log anything noteworthy that may be of interest to others.
