Best approach for learning propagation
    #19333632 - 12/27/13 04:55 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hello Folks,
I'm about halfway through my first successful (so far) grow.  I'm growing P. Cubensis var. B+ on BRF/verm and another on brown rice (whole grain) and vermiculite.

I'd be interested to hear from some more experienced people--what is good way to learn how to propagate the shrooms?  I only got 1 spore syringe and had planned to grow out a flush, make a print, make a syringe, and start over.

Then I foud the Shroomery, and realized there are a ton of ways to propagate mushrooms.  I was thinking of using the TEK where you liquid culture a piece of the stem that you extract with a syringe needle.  It looked easy enough to do, and then you are certain to get mycellium which would eventually fruit.

I also didnt' realize you can germinate spores in a liquid culture--are there benifits to that?

I am almost done with a pretty nice glove box (complete with HEPA filtration), and have a good PC and a pretty good work space in my bathroom.  I think I can do a reasonable job at sterile conditions.  Granted there are actual SKILLS that need to be learned here, but I didn't get any contamination in 12 jars on this grow, so I'm doing reasonably well with that at least.

Thanks for any thoughts--just curious which techniques you guys prefer.  There are a lot more options than I was aware of just a few weeks ago.

do it all...  start by making spore prints and new syringes...  once you've done that a couple of times successfully w/o any contams take one of your syringes and use that to make an LC and a grain master.  then you can play with those propagation methods.

no matter what i always make sure to get at least 4-5 prints from every grow so that at the very least, if i lose everything, i have a library that doesnt' take up very much room that can get me going again.

my two cents...

I was planning to take spore prints from the best specimens in any case.  I mean, why not?  You collect the spores and can still dry the cap.

I guess what got me thinking was that in the mycellium LC TEK I read, the author said that when you go with a spore syringe, some of the mycellium that you end up with will not produce fruit.  They still consume nutrients, but they don't give you anything in return.  So the idea (I think) is that if you propagate a fruit, then you know it's a fruiting strain of mycellium.

I have much to learn--just trying to understand my options.
