Overheated growth
    #19333239 - 12/27/13 02:42 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I'm currently attempting my second grow, and am abit worried that I may have brought myself back to square one...

For a bit if background: I grew about a year and a half ago, using brown rice and vermiculite half pint jars and had pretty good success... But that was in the summer months, when the temperature was ideal. This time, I'm starting with rye grain quart jars and have been worried about the chilliness in my room, so my solution was simple and effective: I bought a small space heater, sat it in my closet and powered it on for a few minutes several times a day to bring the temp closer to the 80s. It's been about a week and a half, and I was starting to see the first spots on mycelium on the jars... Great right?.. Until last night when I had a major goof.

I get home after being gone for about two days (not sleeping that entire time) and check my freezing cold jars. They were icicles to the touch, but the mycelium still looked great. So I clicked on the heater, then the tv... Then woke up 11 hours later to a wonderful toasty room... Then immediately crapped my pants and ran to the closet.

I found my white growth replaced with a clear mucus lining the bottom of the jar. I tumbled the grain, hoping to find a healthy patch of mycelium still thriving, but I had no such luck...

I'm kinda at a loss for what to do now. Should I wait it out and hope that the viable spores left in the grain will take again? Re-inoculate? Scrap the whole thing?

I feel like the grain is still useful, even though there are some dry patches now, but I may have killed every living thing that was trying to make a meal out of it.

Thanks in advance, this is my first post, but I've been reading these forums for years, soaking up the wealth of information that this community provides

How hot did it get?  I can't imagine you getting a room in your house too hot for myc .
It could be anything its hard to help with no pi8ctures.
Do the jars smell funny?

It's hard to figure the exact temperature, the thermometer that was in the closet has been on the fritz and I've yet to replace it. The room was about 96 degrees and I can only assume that the temperature in the closet was 10 degrees hotter because of the missing mycelium. The jars were almost too hot to handle when I examined them.

As for pictures, I really wish that I kept a better record to show the level of growth before the incident, but I did the next best thing and googled abit to find an image with a comparable level of growth:

And currently:

The spots of mycelium have completely disappeared and have been replaced with little globs of mucus.

As for the smell, I haven't opened any of the jars to take a whiff for fear of contamination... and the smell coming from the closet was just warm linens with a slight hint of shroomy smell, but that last bit may have just been in my head.

If it got ten degrees more than 96, I hate to say it but you should toss that out  and start over.

Those are done. They myc is dead and they are now overrun with bacteria. An excellent demonstration why it is advised to heat the room, not the jars. Also IME quart jars are usually a little cool to touch, but the temp inside will be higher. Mycelium on grains generate a lot of heat, so temps should be lower than what you would use for pf tek.

I grow in one hell of a cold ass climate here in the winter. I do not use a TITI. May take a little longer, but I got so many projects on the go that its a good thing.

I had that happen once, I had turned the oil radiator up instead of down and came in
and it was a cool 92'' for a few days, jars grew like mad and never colonized, ofc I put it down to 80 immediately after noticing though.
