Mycological Newb here
    #19328234 - 12/26/13 10:19 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

1st of all, I would like to thank everyone at the Shroomery and the amazing quantity of content for review. This sight makes it pretty easy to take the initiative!

I'm no newb to Hydroponic gardens and the brewing of Alcohol but I wanted to try something new as, while I get older my tolerance to the risk of local social communications reduces.

Iv'e lurked here for about the past 6 months and wanted to show off my pride and joy, while potentially receiving some critique from the more experienced.

I've dedicated an entire room of my house to the joys and care of my mycological endeavors.

Early on, I had some issues with trichoderma contamination at the G2G xfer stages, then birthing poo stages. I basically addressed every possible cause of the conditions at that point, maybe even a little overkill. But enough about the failures of a lazy newb, lets focus on how things are now.

Above, I'm sure you can identify everything in the pics. I modified and re-purposed that sand blasting cabinet for a hepa filtered positive air pressure glove box.

I keep no fabric or any surface that cannot be misted with bleach water or ISO. I purchased a dedicated air filter and temp controlled heater. I blocked off the heat register and air sealed the entry door. I sealed off all the windows. I also installed a furnace hepa filter to keep the entire house low of airborne contamination. I also recently rented a mold killing and encapsulating fogger from Home Depot http://www.homedepot.com/p/Concrobium-1-Gal-Mold-Control-Fogger-200-620810/100489874# to clean the entire house of contams for good measure.

So, I started with several different types of spore syringes to the pf TEK. Then to WBS in a Myco bag. Then to Horse Poo  which I have an unlimited supply of. I currently have about 20 gallons of WBS that will be transferred to the bulk sub.

Due to past Trich contam, I bought 4 bricks of Coco Coir which I think I am going to use with poo/coffee tea. I will hydrate the coir with the tea and pasteurize using Franks TEKs. I have 2 more green houses for a total of 3 that I would like to fill over the next month.

Some other pics:

These started pinning Christmas Morning!

As far as cleanliness, I spray ISO on everything I handle. I ISO the room hard surfaces every time I finish my work for the day. I also, Lysol the room twice a day. All, bowls, boxes, Greenhouses, etc. get cleaned with 1-10 bleach / water whenever used or stored.

I'm going to be running to Home Depot today for some odds and ends to expand my growing chambers and duct the humidifiers. I will be spending most of the next 4 days working on my room and preparing medium while I have the time off from work. Any advice / recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I will check back and update this thread often over the next few days. Thanks in advance!

hey dude, welcome 2 the community!

great to see someone so far along with so little posts.
that means you've been doing your homework

love how you jumped straight to the Martha. I've got plans to set a couple of
those guys up in the basement when the temperatures get a lil better

a few pointers I have to offer:

do your sterile work in a separate room than you're fruiting in.
this way you will minimize contaminates on both ends.

on the sandblasting box, I'm not sure how good of an idea it is to have
airflow going on in there. we use the glovebox/still air box to serve mainly
one purpose, working in still air. this is probably why you are experiencing
contam issues during g2g transfers. we use hepa filters in mycology in
a different manner. instead of trying to make clean air in a turbulent box
we work directly infront of a hepa filter blowing at laminar flow out in the open.
this way any spores will be blown away by 99% sterile air.

things are looking good though! can't wait to see a log with that Martha filled up :peace:

I appreciate your feedback! I've recognized the glovebox as being a weak point of my TEK. The thought there was, at least if I sterilize the inside before working in it and then force clean air into the box while working, no residual could contaminate it. However the turbulence is an issue at times I believe. I've researched how Laminar flow hoods are constructed and will be making one rather than buying an overpriced from a lab supply store. As long as I don't skimp on the hep filters for the hood, I should work out great. I would likely set it up in another room as you recommended.

Edit to add: I look forward to being able to record a Journal when I have the permissions. That way I can be critiqued on the fly. After all, who wants to make noob mistakes unnecessarily?

I think the sand blaster is a cool idea. Why not try reversing your heap so it pulls air out of the box and run it before you start working in it. Let the air settle then do your thing. I may be wrong, just a thought.

Did you get the box from Harbor Freight?  I've seen a box just like that one at harbor freight and I wanted to get it for awhile.  I wasn't going to put any air flow in it though.  I was going to try and seal it up as air tight as possible.

Anyways welcome to the shroomery.

ill loosely endorse this.

over all looks good.
im not wild about marthas though.

adopt a V- tek attitude, and some mods maybe with what ya got,
and that room could blow down most growers here.

keep up the good work.

Nobody attacks you for equipment or skill.  They attack you for writing dadaist poems full of unsubstantiated claims.

OP, that's a very impressive set-up!  I'm jealous!  What's your contam rate these days--have you got it all sorted out?

cronicr: The gloves detach easily.

MudaFuka: Because the blast cabinet is not completely air tight. Therefore it would pull unfiltered air from the surroundings.

Willy Wonka: Yes it is. I sealed the seams while constructing but with a lighter test on negative air, I still found air breaches. The issues with this cabinet and why I would not recommend it is because it's pretty difficult to clean, sometimes when doing transfers, it can get a little messy - all of the bolts and nuts that stick out leave a lot of edges to get in the way when wiping it out, and the gloves are kind of thick / difficult to manage intricate tasks.

anne halonium: That was actually the 1st time I had read of the V TEK. I'll look more into that when I have a bit more time. I'm kind of committed to what I have at the moment but am always interested in ways that may suit my needs better.

van der griegen:  Zero atm but the control is minimal. It has only been a couple of weeks since the trich wars! I will know a lot more over the next 2 weeks if my adopted TEKs will come through. Especially because I intend on making myc syringes, performing g2g transfers, preparing and inoculating a shit load of new bulk, and introducing another new strain via PF TEK however I have had 100% success w/ PF TEK so far, I have just never birthed a jar. Just seems like a waste of Myc. when you have the resources at my disposal.

I would like to thank everyone for your kind words. I've worked really hard to get where I am now. I work a lot of hours so this consumes my spare time in the evenings (if I get them) and weekends. I expect it will pay off in the end though.

it appears, no matter what methods you use,
you intend to be clean, neat , organized,
with good bio handling control, in a low profile setting.
im gonna bet you read and research.

so your absolutely cool by me already.

its rare to see a room you could "just walk in and work with confidence".
good job.

Again, I appreciate your kind words.

I understand the importance of being self sufficient.

The TEK found here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6783814#6783814 or something similar is really appealing to me. I could even monitor the environment from my phone and double the program as a security system. That's just freaking cool!

I'm pretty excited. This is an updated pic of the sole survivor of the Trich Wars! 1st I've fruited so far successfully.

Edit to add: Sorry, I can't get my Camera to focus any better than that for some reason.

The above pan was in the Greenhouse with all of the contaminated ones. It didn't used to be cased either. I sprayed the top with ISO (killing the top layer), dunked it for 24 hours, then quarantined it in a tote for over a week and cased it. After another week with no signs of Trichodermas revenge and seeing myc pop out of the casing, I decided to chance fruiting again. I never actually observed Trich on this one but better safe than sorry. Seems to be doing great!

There are no other subs needing this space for another week or more so I guess this one gives my Greenhouse a test run.

Man I hope I've pounded that Tich bitch into submission for good.

Nice pinset on that tray!  Hope you've still got enough moisture in your sub to support it.  Make sure it's always glistening--you may have to step up your misting schedule a bit.
