very slow colonization
    #19332655 - 12/27/13 11:29 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone,
I received spires from spores 101 about 6 weeks or so ago. They jars stated colonizing three weeks after inoculation and now (three weeks later) still are fully colonised. The side walls of the jar and the bottom are nearly completely covered with white mycelium but the top of the jars is still vermiculite (the top half inch or so). Does it have to be completely 100% covered in mycelium to start fruiting or no? There is no pinheads in the jars and I have them in complete darkness at 72% with no tape over the airholes on the lids. I will post pictures when I get home from work

After the jar is visually white all over wait a week for the interior of the cake to colonize and for it to consolidate into a single mass and then birth it.

If your using the PF method, the top half inch is non nutritive and won't grow anything, it's there to be a filter.

I realized the issue from spores101 but thankfully it turned out okay spore wise. The Cambodian strain is the once Thats likely done growing as the only part left is the very too of the jar which you said is the filter. I'm leaving this weekend andwill start the birthing process when I come back on monday. The great white monster strain just started colonizing however after all of this time for some reason so it'll probably take another month for that to be ready unfortunately.

You don't need to keep colonizing jars in complete darkness. mycelium benefits from 12/12 scheduled lighting at all stages (indirect during colonizing and direct during fruiting). This helps develop a circadian rhythm.
