Heating my fruiting chamber
#19332601 - 12/27/13 11:15 AM (10 years, 1 month ago) |

I only have two options to work with. My mushrooms are in a Shotgun
I found a Fish tank heater and... a stone bubbler machine that releases oxygen
I was thinking for the fish heater I could put it in a tray with the shotgun suspended on top?
Or put the stone bubbler in boilin water and keep swichin it out every few hours, would that even work?
Any ideas/ tips much appreciated !

SGFCs use latent heat of vaporization in the perlite to provide FAE, if you add a heater it will probably muck up the process :p. You'd have to heat your whole grow space to at least close to the fruiting temperatures.
If it's on the floor, it's about 5-10 degrees colder down there then at chest height.

No they don't.
The heat currents come from the mycellium.
The humidity comes from water evaporating off both the perlite and the cakes.
Heat and humidity both rise out the top holes....this pulls fresh air in up thru the bottom holes and up thru the perlite.
That is how the chamber gets FAE........not from latent heat of vaporization in the perlite.....

Maybe someone should test both hypothesis's to find out. I'm willing to bet a cakeless SGFC will get just as moist. Something for another discussion, anyway.
Meanwhile, defer to Notahacker420.

my room temp is 63. Had my cakes in the shotgun for 3 weeks now, and no fruitin, only mutated pins. Anyways my temp and humidity reader came today so now I realized it's probably because of low temp. Hope there is still hope. Thanks guys! any ideas how I can utiliize the fish heater for my chamber?

In a pan of water under your chamber which is elevated a few inches.

loopis my best suggestion is to simply heat the room long enough for them to pin, after that temp drops won't stop them

ahh neat trick twisted, thanks for the share. Looks like a good price for that heater. Do u have that model?I was looking for a small portable heater, do u have anything to say about those? I was thinkin I can put it right next to my shotgun. Would getting a fan operated one be beneficial or worse?

Place it in the room, not really near the chamber....remember heat the room, not the chamber.
And there should be no running fans in the room with the SGFC.

If i don't place it near chamber, the mini portable heaters will still help? I also put a fish tank bubbler inside of my shotgun, switchin out the water with boiling to help with temp and fresh air exchange. Was that a good idea?or does it sound like a disaster?

Did the tek say to do that?
No it's a terrible idea.

can you explain why it's a terrible idea? I needed way higher humidity and temp, both of which this extra addition has helped with

Because the SGFC was designed to work off a rooms natural currents, without the need for a pump or airstion or anything.
If you mess with those currents, your humidity will drop.
Using the airstone is only hurting you, as is adding boiling hot water.....you are ruining your humidity...just follow the tek as it is written without deviation for maximum potential.

My explanation is simple......follow the tek.
If the SGFC was built to spec than the humidity will be perfect, regardless of what some made in china hygrometer says.

Hey, I just bought a portable heater....it ended up having a fan, The current isn't that strong and I placed it on a shelf above my shotgun. Will my shotgun be fine? or are the sutle air currents that aren't even hitting my chamber directly going to fuck it up?
