My ingrained compulsion to kill bugs
#19332565 - 12/27/13 11:03 AM (10 years, 1 month ago) |
|
|
I am a man who believes that all is one, that every person, tree, bug, or object is part of me, which is to say part of everything, which Is what most people refer to as "god". And yet, if i see a small critter scurrying across my floor, i impulsively smash it -- with only a postmortem consideration for the extension of myself I've just relinquished of its right to live out its natural life.
It saddens me.
But at least I acknowledge the dissonance between beliefs and compulsions. One day I shall overcome.
I'm sorry, bug.

I either trap them then let them free outside or I just ignore then and let them continue scurrying on.
I remember in High School one of my friends would burn bugs with a torch lighter it made me wanna cry

I generally only kill bugs when there is a reason. Anything that will bite me, eat my plants or contaminate/eat my food I'll kill. Can't say it bothers me to do so, they wouldn't give a fuck if I died.

same, if they don't bug me then i leave them alone. when there's a bug i want to kill i start thinking about it too much and can't do it. i mean, like, what about it's family, ya know?

I only kill bugs when they really interfere with my well being. But cockroaches really creep me out. I still let them out if I can do so easily.

I'm glad you acknowledge that killing bugs isn't nice. (Nice may not be the best word, but I don't wanna get into the whole "technically you're killing a piece of yourself" argument).
I too am quite squeamish when I see bugs (spiders mostly), but think about it logically. Spiders kill mosquitoes. And I fucking hate mosquitoes. Since I've put this in my mind, I've recently been capturing spiders and putting them outside instead of squashin' em.
Actually, I don't even care if mosquitoes are part of the "all is one" mindset. Kill 'em. They spread disease and make us itch and (if you've ever been camping) you know how swarms of them can attack.
But yeah....we fear things much smaller than us for no real reason.

If its a pest I'll get rid of it. If its a predator I'll keep it. If its in my room and large enough to trap I will bring it outside. There are some spiders that stay in the corners of my bedroom and bathroom that I let stay. Then there are these fast running ones that I see running across my ceiling. I take those guys out with rubber bands. They like to run across everything and drop down from above. Most likely to walk across my face while sleeping. It gets bad if not kept in check. Like I been lax with them then one year i had to kill 20 of those runners. Now there is a couple survivors that mind there own business. Probably brooding clutches

I like bugs. I see them as little robots, but i like helping them if i can. I give spiders water, some species drink. I've rescued bees and fed them. I found a spider that had somehow got its leg stuck in its fang and i pulled it out with a pin. I think my compassion is weird to most people. I used to take a alpha species approach but i've softened over the years. There's nothing here really that's dangerous. I don't mind nuking pests, aphids/fungus gnats, those fuckers.

Wasps still freak me out a bit, i'm better than i used to be. My friend stood on a nest and i ran into a swarm of them when i was a kid. I sit and watch them cruising around plants now, they don't mean any harm.
We had a heat wave last July and i sprayed water all over the garden when i was doing the plants. i thought there must be thousands of satisfied little bugs having a drink. I'm glad the neighbors didn't ask me what i was doing.

Yup. That's insane lol.
I always have a back and forth moral debate in my own mind when I see a bug in my house and think about killing it. Most of the time I'll let them go on their merry way if it's a fly or small beetle.
A spider or 2 are cool to have as well if they are by my ceiling since they eat mosquitoes that come in.
For some reason tho, cockroaches just instill dirtiness in everything they touch (at least in my mind) and I do everything possible to immediately kill it and dispose of it.

Bugs are slaves of their genetic attributes. They have no other purpose than to to eat and replicate. What they eat is a useful part of the environment because everything is related, but killing a few million won't even make a difference. Go ahead and kill every single bug you see!

its not a matter of whether killing bugs is bad for the utility i'm depriving the earth. or whether not killing bugs is bad because of the utility they deprive the earth.
it has to do with the existence of that bug's individual consciousness. and the fact that I ended it's "period of separation" (from the whole) prematurely with my compulsive smashing.
sorry bug.

Bugs have no conciousness. You need a highly evolved brain for that. Bugs have ganglias and a slightly more evolved photocerebrum... Don't worry man, you are not hurting anything.

dude i mean, it's a great film insofar as it's entertaining and i love the basics of the plot. but i mean, i think:
Rotten Tomatos: ~3/5 IMDB: 3.55/5 Metascore: Critics 2.5/5, users 3.75/5
So yeah i guess its not "bad". but i wouldn't call it "good" either. Good as in "Saving Private Ryan was a good movie"

The only small critters I kill are Yellow Sac Spiders, which are pretty common in my house. They have an extremely painful bite and like to make nests in clothing.
Everything else gets caught and released, unless my cat gets to it first.

The main bugs I kill are things like mosquitoes. With deerflies or horseflies I will rip a wing off instead because killing them will attract more. If something is attempting to feed on me then it's war. Houseflies I will kill if they get in the house in the summer because they spread disease, but lately my Nepenthes plants have done the job for me pretty efficiently. Spiders I have no beef with.

If you didn't say it was good, than that means you thought it was bad. I am officially butthurt. Are you happy now?
It called camp. Bad in a good way. Or good, in a bad way.

Bugs should no better than to come around me i don't just kill them but i burn off their legs with hot pins, tear their wings off, gouch out their eyeballs and drown them in containers of water.
I'm hitler and bugs are my jews.
Okay, I really don't do that. But sometimes it crosses my mind... those little fuckers

I stopped by the casino at arundel mills to check out the poker room. Meh. Looks really busy, and the table minimums are pretty excessive 150 at the 1-2 level. I think I'd like to find a tourney to test it out first.

Right, some bugs are really good like lacewings, ladybugs, earthworms, all kinds of pollinators, etc. Some bugs are horrible, like stink bugs.
