Gymnopilus species can easily spread to stumps and fallen logs and continue to fruit for years.

HEY STEEEBO
Go for Allenii. Scout parks with large areas of planted mulch. large seeding trees will continue to provide food for myc in further years.
Locate at moderate to high shade, close to low ground cover (shrubs, flowers), well drained area. Combine substrate of mixxed wood chips/pulp/cuttings, newspaper, egg carton, RBG, verm, and perlite. Cover disturbed area after planting with local/immediate foilage.
You're going to need to move a large amount of spawn for prominent results. Prep at least 5Gal worth for dist. in the wild per-location.
Move at night, carry discreet unmarked jars of spawn. Garden spades/tillers make quick work of park mulches/soils.
Spread spawn roughly 1-2" below casing layer, consider rainfall level to avoid dead spawn.
You've got a long wait, kick back. If you started in spring this year Check the following season, report back. If not get started now and you might get results within the year or 1.5yr, this is about commitment
I do not condone or endorse any actions said above

Bro, slow times
Might make it up to PNW in short time, had a stint with west coast genetics here in the mid-atlantic! east/west/BC coast genetics on the spread!
hope all is well with you!

If the temp drops for only one night I think you will be fine with 4" on top. Look at nurseries in your area they probably just stack a few bags of much around plants that shouldn't get below 25-28f above ground in pots and they live fine through winters. If it 14 for days / weeks that would be a different story as it would freeze deeper each day

Not yet but it's a super vigorous species that warrants more attempts. As long as the patch in the ground survived that freeze, it should be growing again now like everything else. It's so warm!! I was spreading chips in a t shirt yesterday! I hope for a solid chance of fruits this year. Not sure when though.

Quote:
stevo said: Psylosymon how do you go about transitioning your ovoid cultures to unsterile soil? i've heard people recommend casing with unpasteurized leaf mulch and stuff but surely that has a horrible success rate doesn't it? Should I just let my sterilized chips sit in a flower pot outside for some time before planting or what should I do? I know it's too early but I mean when the time is right.
the reason for not pasturizing subs for outdoors is that it makes it just that much easier for competing organisms to take over, we pasturize indoors because it's a good way of stopping mold spores from getting a foothold but outdoors most molds have already germinated and can easily colonize a pasturized sub, so the only thing that gets pasturized for outdoor subs is coir because it makes it easier for myc to digest

That's one of the things im worried about. Accidentally picking a non active out of one of my infinite beds. That'd ruin someone's day lol. I'm definitely going with at least a couple pots of each species to help me get used to what I'm looking for. The "wild" beds are more for spreading the joy around my area. Also to give me something to do when I'm on my walks.

Lmao I was only planing on covering a couple acres in random spots probably like 3'by 3'by 10" beds. I think that's that go big or go home mentality you're talking about?
Also I'm planning on them not being able to survive my harsh winters. Hopefully they will or at least with some covering. Anyways that's why I'm planning on covering all my bases this year then next year see which does best. Some pots, some covered, some not and anything else anyone thinks of!

Get over the simple carbs+startches BREH, you need lignin - you need sucrose based carbs. Think of this like a diet! nuts and such are on the right track, but the simple stuff is out of the question.
Good luck

Which species and what part of the world if I may ask? My original plan was to put some thick hollow stemmed grass like stiltgrass and reed canary over my patch but it never happened that way because there's always someone looking and carrying trash bags of grass looks wierd. It got down to 10F last night but appears that the snow has insulated it as mentioned above. The weather however calls for all the snow to melt and then drop down to 8. So I'm expecting the same tragity as you are at least in the spots I seeded which do not benefit from the thermal capacity from a body of water or house foundation.
I don't have anything going yet but I wanna start with Ps. Cyans and Ovoids, then eventually anything else I can get my hands on.
Ehh idc if Leo wants me 1.they need alot more info then just where I am. 2. They probably already have everything they need on me. I live in WI on the edge of zone 5 close to zone 4. Since everything says its possible into zone 4. I'm very hopeful that with a little extra care i can pull this off.
I usually get a couple feet of snow that sticks till spring. I figured that plus some card board and woodchips and they are all set from winter till summer.
Although we are getting a record low -50 Sunday into Monday. And we get a couple days in a row where its like -20ish then like 10 then back into the negatives. That's mostly what I'm worried about is those stretches below freezing.

Corn is heavy starch and carb, look up neut info for grains/nuts, consider wood degredation and release of nutrients. You may be on the right path, just take a look from the outside.. limit nutrients, encourage growth, isolate high penitential, etc
Egg carton is awesome, it's wood pulp of recycled type, provides large amount of processed lignin - gives great consumability and transfer before going to full wood. plenty of soft stuff for myc to consume and adjust diet before taking other lignin consumables. Plently of genetics working hard here on the east coast
